is this an ok Diesel setup?
It makes 120 Diesel and 24 Naphtha /60 probably going to use the naphtha for plastic.

it also makes 6 fuel gas I just burn. and of course some sour water

looks fine although very energy intensive because of the Electrolyzer II. My question is why such a small setup? During this stage of the game I tend to have between 6 to 8 column going to produce enough diesel along with other products.

IDK Im still on steam power I have 4 ships going out 2 for coal and 2 for oil. I'm also on the ALL IN ONE map which is freaking huge. I only use my diesel for trucks and ships right now. I am at about 1900 population. food is ok I only made this new one to include stage 3 because im now needing medicines. and Im using naphtha for plastic and for that part. Im going to rebuild the first small one only for to keep rubber going this one is for fuel.

I also do not want a huge mega everything is in one spot type of island, I choose the super large one because Im actually planning to have 2 seperate "cities" possibly 3 im telling you this island is freaking huge.

One big question I have is: Why are you dumping the sour water? Why accept the hit in pollution and the loss of the extra resources?

One thing I've learned is that your refining needs drastically change with population, technology, and industrial requirements. You'll probably want to go with One Big Refinery regardless, because it will probably be the most complicated build on the island. (I wouldn't want to have to build more than one)

I've found that modularizing the refinery, so that I can adjust processing and priority by simply moving some pipes around has worked the best.

"Modules" are basically
- Crude oil distilling
- One line of cracking units each for most of the recipes (lengthen or shorten as needed)
- Sour water processing (can get very large if you export slag)
- H2 production
- Plastic
- Rubber
- Fertilizer
- Sulfur->Slag processing, if you're not exporting sulfur
- One line of 4-6 storages for each of diesel, naptha, fuel gas, H2, ammonia, fertilizer, sulfur. The storages should be separated by pipe balancers so you can take pipes in or out with priority. I usually build the first and last to begin with, and replace the ones in the middle with pipes until I have the spare construction parts.
- An area between everything to run the pipes (quite a lot of space - there will be a LOT of pipes). I make things easier for myself in this area by running north/south pipes at levels 1 and 3, and east/west at level 2 and 4.

conveyoring in the coal seems like not the most efficient way to make steam to me , but maybe you have a good reason for it.

here is my "the last oil design that I will need" right before I researched the cracking and reforming. this is my first play through in that high of technology level so not everything worked right out of the gate. and now that I'm in need of plastic I am about to build a much better laid out design right next to it

Fair enough. I have not tried multiple cities but that does sound like a interesting challenge.

For context I try to limit my coal use for power as I find it unwise to rely on it for everything.
This leads to my oil refinery needing to be a lot bigger to generate all the oil products I need to power the base.

Edit: I looked back at the diesel usage and you really don't use that much for vehicles.
4 columns should be fine until late game. You may get into trouble when you start using mega excavators but that is for later.

Edit 2: here is my current setup. cracking excess oil products on the right, off screen. I am importing sour water so that's why the excess sour water strippers.
