I don't know about roads, they become congested. Besides the routes are so complex and with freight moving all over the map at a drop of dime. It would be a nightmare! Like Simcity 4 . God I hated that game.
With that being said; larger vehicles have to avoid heights from pipes and conveyor belts. I can't imagine how roads would improve that.

Second answer is the dev pointing this out as well.
I'd like to dig a deep trench and put a bridge many units above it. It could anchor belts and pipes on it, as well as under.
That is unless the devs have said somewhere that they plan to implement collision for vehicles, which I think would be a bad idea.
