Captain of Industry

Captain of Industry

How realistic is the gameplay?
I am curious about this game, but I'm a bit worried about a few things.

First, that the simulation aspect is underbaked and that a lot of production chains turn out to be gamey. I'm very interested in the educational aspect of it, and actually learning about how certain industries work, and would be disappointed if it turns out to be very surface level.

Secondly, I'm not sure how to feel about the Unity mechanic. It feels a bit abstract, and I didn't like the concept in Stellaris either.

Does the game feel like an awkward mix of simulation and the typical factory automation gameplay? Or does it go in depth on the simulation aspect?

Thanks in advance!

It's a game in the end. If you like factory games you should try it. It's as good as Factorio and Dyson Sphere and Satisfactory. It does lean to be more realistic for the chains and looks than all the other mentioned games. But I wouldn't call it a simulation.

It's a video game. And an awesome one. If you would like to learn about realistic factories you could get a job in one.
You can change the difficulty in very granular ways including unity not helping you at all.

How does it being a game have to mean it can't simulate industrial processes? What a ♥♥♥♥ community, strawmanning a valid question. If the industry part in the title is just a pretense, might as well play Factorio since I already own it and never got the chance to get to it. I'm unsubbing from this conversation. Enjoy your niche game.

Don't take your dollies and go home!
Yeesh. This is the kind of person who throws a fit if he doesn't think he got enough sauce packets at BK.

Bye. Your missing out on an amazing game.

Gameplay is realistic enough for me to learn a few things about IRL industries here and there. It sparks inspiration to learn about the real deal - at least in me. I can be aware about the arcadey-ness of numbers and still read up on the extrem complex industries behind oil cracking.

I’d actually say this game is one of the most realistic for its accessibility level (yes, there are more realistic industry games but they are largely beyond me). I’ve looked up the processes behind some of these before. It’s a game first and foremost but it is decently immersive.

Either buy it, set your phone to run a 110 minute timer, and then when it dings either ask Gabe for a refund or else keep playing because you've decided you like it.

...Or else, go to YouTube and watch some Let's Play footage, to get an impression of what the game is like. You'd do better by watching someone who's fairly new to the game, not someone like Nilaus or JD Plays.

Probably talking to the void, since the OP has stated they are done with the conversation, but:

It's not a simulation. That said, the productions chains to come off pretty realistic. What I mean is, a electrolyzer using water will output hydrogen and oxygen. But not at a 2:1 ratio. I wouldn't use it as a educational game if you're trying to teach things like chemistry. Basic associations like iron ore going through a smelter will produce molten iron, which can be turned into useable iron do still work, though.

If you want to play a game without playing a game and do realistic simulations with ERP support and all that instead, then obtain an industrial or manufacturing software license. There are a couple of them out there, but they won't be near as cheap as a game. There will never be a game that does that on a realistic level because that would require actual engineers on the ground, obtaining several types of industrial certificates and licenses, as well as, of course, some actual computing power. Games will always simplify, gamify, and break it down to a level that it is actual fun, interactive, easy to learn and difficult to master. It's a bit like LEGO, which doesn't teach you how to do real-life construction work, but at least it lets you create stuff with building blocks as well.

Unity in this game only carries the same named resource in Stellaris, but they are not the same in terms of mechanics or even purpose, simply because both games are not even within the same genre.

OP is off somewhere else asking if Stardew Valley is a realistic farming sim.

... But is it really in a valley?

How realistic are the layers of the valley? Is wheat farming truly realistic?
