vehicle ramp is a silly size.
Vehicles in CoI come in 3 sizes, but from the point of view of access, there are only 2: The small and medium vehicles will travel through gaps 3 small squares wide, but the large vehicles need 5 small squares. Meanwhile we have the vehicle ramp for crossing pipes etc. which has a road way 6 squares wide: in tight spaces it eats too much room, especially as it has an extra 2 squares of wall along the sides.

I propose having 2 vehicle ramps: one with a roadway 3 wide which will carry the small and medium vehicles, and a second one (researched later, about where mega vehicles are in the tree) with a roadway 5 wide for the mega vehicles. Optionally the longest ramp with lots of space for pipes under it could be unlocked with the wider ramps, with the first ramp not having that longest option.

To be honest, I really like being able to build ramps that T3 vehicles can traverse from the start. It means I don't have to rebuild them in all kinds of places later.

A smaller version that T3 can't traverse might be nice for more compact builds, though.

a 6 wide ramp lets 2 small or medium vehicles cross at the same time. It reduces choke points

I always thought a more narrow ramp that you would never intend T3 to go over would be great. Even if it only let one or two transports through.
What I would REALLY like is modular ramps so you could customize for particular needs.
It would also be useful if they could bridge gaps and not just be a ramp,

while I can understand the mechanical reasons for the size, I also can understand the occasional raised eyebrows, when people are placing ramps for the first time. ;)

My guess why (aside of people generally don't want to spend the space on ramps) is that it visually highlights the scale differences in the game. The ramps are essentially in the scale of the trucks, with some wiggle room for pathfinding. The buildings are in a smaller scale, being too small in relation to the moving parts. Not uncommon to fit stuff in and give stuff more a size in functional game terms. as long as nothing puts a spotlight on it it isn't really a problem - ramps to put a small light on it.

i prefer not having to change the ramps later
