Need help with understanding levels and planning quarry size
I'd like to mine every bit of resource in the different deposits, for that I am planning to do stepped quarries thanks to the retaining walls but I find it difficult to know how big the surface needed will be.

I could do it step by step, moving walls further everytime I dig 5 tiles deeper but that would waste building ressources and I may need to move buildins too close to the quarry.

Is there a foolproof method to plan where to place the surface walls ?

Right now I'm thinking of looking of the outermost parts of the deposit, count the levels and place a wall (1+level//5) mining squares away. For exemple for 13 levels I'd put it 3 mining squares away.

Retaining walls can be easily moved - build an outward layer to an existing perimeter, dismantle the existing wall and build new one 5 levels deeper below the original wall, so you don't have to plan absolutely everything in one go. True, you will lose some resources and time on rebuilding, but not overly much.

You now need two layers of dirt for farms. So fill it to 1 and fill it to +3 (the new normal level).
Not true in my experience. I only need one layer of dirt over the first two initial layers consisting of trash, rock, slag and other stuff.
If you dump junk at +1 next to a tile your dumping dirt +2, they can mix. Always leave 1 tile open between them. This can lead to tiles that can't be farmed and have to be mined back to +1 then refilled with just dirt.

This makes sense. I always dump Dirt last, long after I dump trash. So I have never seen this happen that I can remember.
