Eventually I upgrade everything, but those first 5 or 10 Trucks helps a lot. They can move 3.3 times as much, but they use only something like 2.75 as much Diesel and Maintenance as the Pick-Ups, and they're not slower. In fact I think I once saw someone claim that they drive slightly faster, but I haven't seen anyone confirm that, nor have I tested it.
At other times, if I'm at vehicle cap and pining, though, I'll ifirst replace my tier-1 Tree Cutters with a single tier-2 Large Tree Cutter, and assign a couple of Trucks to it. Basically I go from having 2 Tree Cutters with 3 Pick-Ups assigned to each, and to having 1 Large Tree Cutter with 2 Trucks assigned to it, so free up a bunch of Pick-Ups (4) to join the general logistics fleet as well as 1 more vehicle cap so that I can build 1 more Truck to join the general logi fleet.
I tend to upgrade the Small Excavators and the Pick-Ups assigned to mining last, especially the 1 small Excavator and 1 Pick-Up that I have assigned to Sand and to Limestone, since 1 of each is plenty to fill early game needs.
Good points all. For once, I stopped to consider what I'm doing rather than wait until I was over my head. Trucks are also cheaper to upgrade with regard to parts (30 vs 45) so it makes sense to convert 10 trucks that are almost always moving. Thanks.
