Iron -> Molten iron?
Steel needs molten iron. Rather than build more plants to produce more molten iron from iron ore I should be able to melt already excess supply of existing iron, but there doesn't appear to be a method for doing so.

There isn't such a method, but even then, how much Iron do you have stockpiled? 2000? 4000? You'll need those to make more tier-1 Construction Parts anyway, so it's not a loss.

build a separate steel production line that turns molten iron into molten steel... (look into the recipe). Iron plates can't be turned back into steel.

Strange thing is that the mechanical parts production requires iron but as soon as you upgrade those assembly to robotic assembly it requires steel.

After upgrading I had to change my iron melting line to have more of the steel production and less of the iron production attached. Yes they are feed from the very same molten iron line in my case.

You can make, and should, switch on mechanical parts to steel around electric 2. It is much more effective recipe with double the output so you need less factories.

More than 3000 iron piled up. I know I can just change from making iron plates to making steel but just thought as a *realistic* alternative is to be able to recycle the excess iron.

As mentioned, it's not excess, it's just stored until use. Just means your iron smelters get a longer break before they have to switch on again, you're still using iron, after all.

Not strange at all. The change used to be at electric 2. People complained that it came without any warning, so it got changed so electric 2 has both options. Very useful when you're slowly increasing steel production still, you can have both hooked up and if steel runs dry because of some mistake you make, production still runs, just less efficient with the iron.

But yes, different assembly workshops have different recipes. It's always a good idea to have a look what a new assembly structure can and can't do.
