Do NOT overlap a dumping area with another area (like a mine area) otherwise the dumping items from the mine site might stray into your other dumping ground. I had my 'dirt' pile ruined this way. My Iron mine trucks filled the dirt pile with rocks and I had to sort it out later.
The best part of this is that the towers are cheap (like 15 construction parts) and they have an infinite range. I build four or so clustered together in a spot I know I'm not going to be messing with like near the Office or the Vehicle building. You can rename them too (Dumping South, Digging East, whatever) to keep them straight. When you're noting using them, pause them so they don't take Maintenance.
Good luck.
Also, the towers don't need maintenance. And they don't even need to be built. If you only want to use one for dumping purposes, you could just pause the blueprint and it'll work.
