Finite Resources is a good feature. But....
running out key resources such as coal. Not Fun.
Trade does not compensate very well, when there is no more coal in the island.

I think the idea is that you need to switch away from recipies that use coal as fast as possible, and save it for the important stuff
You can make it from wood wich you can get in large amounts from sawmills too if you recall.

yea I understand that, but I am on the final leg of the tech tree and the consumption of resources also increases with the tech you are in. So coal burns faster then in lower techs. But at the current rate, some resources run out faster than you can complete the tech tree.
I mean you can get coal from trade, but not in the same rate. Oil runs out even faster than coal. And yes you can trade, but it the game is resource hungry the higher the tech you are in
Wish there were world mines for iron, copper and gold. Coal and wood are easily infinite through world mines. Contracts are alright but... hope they get some tweaking over the next few months.

and to make matters worse, is not all resources that can be traded. Another example is, how many solar power panels do you need to compensate for steam power. you would need to cover half the island with panels. to produce ethanol takes forever too

Do not get me wrong, resources should become scarce, but not make it almost impossible to complete all techs.
if there are more resources you never change the system to higher tier components or contracts or new rezepts
this game can played endless on all settings low or high if you understand it

I see some treads with this "problem". But how many people realy run out of ressources ? Or you have a other strategy mass buildings like factorio ect. My self never run out, play on captain. or you make energy only with dieselgenerators, or make steam only with coal. the key is use all new techs, like biodiesel, heavy oil cracking, graphite ect. for ex. i'm on year 3,6k (techmax at 2k) and my second oil rig is on 50%, no trade, solarenergy 10MW (and no its not the half island^^), steam for dieselprod. with nucelar ect. only point your right: need loot of time. but its your choice how big, how nice, how fast.

Weird, you typed alot of words in a way that seems to be disagreeing with OP but infact entirly 100% agreed that ores should not be finite.

Sry for my bad english. I try to say, if you play normal you have mass of ressources and options. so ores can be finite. before you start a game, check the settings.

I agree. Overall Coal is way to decisive for energy production.
would be a good idea that with new tech one could discover new deposits.
AllyGatoR Sep 12, 2022 @ 6:06pm
There is abundant deposits of iron, copper and limestone, eve the 1 deposit of gold is enough. But coal, unless somehow new tech can better compensate for this as an energy source is just not enough. How about more energy efficient tech? but it seems the game is programmed to consume more coal with each tech, than lower the consumption of this one resource
the point of the game is ...dont need coal , iron ore copper ore
if you reach this point you understand all workings of the game

This is in fact a mirror of current energy on Earth. Coal is still a major source of power, but we don't know how much is still available. Wind and Solar will only get you so far because they are unstable and expensive for low energy density.

The world mines help, but only kicks the goalposts down the road. You need to start producing energy from oil / gas and Nuclear as it becomes available.
Prometheus0000 Sep 13, 2022 @ 3:22pm
Basic distiller -> distillation stage 1 uses no coal for diesel, blast furnace I -> II saves coal, rotary kiln -> gas version doesn't use it anymore, switching the rubber maker to sulfur stops using coal, distilling seawater in the basic distiller uses coal, but the thermal one may not depending on how you get the steam, blast furnace II -> arc furnace II saves a bunch of coal, CO2 -> graphite saves coal. You can also use gas from oil to power turbines, or use nuclear. There's a ton of ways to save coal, you just need to use them, it definitely doesn't just increase, not unless you want to scale up.
Puls Sep 13, 2022 @ 7:05pm
And for the rest you can make coal from wood (infiniti). If i read that some people makes energy with coal and fuel, then i understand why they are so salty about the finiti ressources...
