Priority for power generators
It does not work. I have several power generators. Half is set to prio 5 half is set to prio 6.
The 5 should run first, but the game ignores the priority setting.

Is it all just power generators or diesel generators as well? From what I can tell, diesel generators switch on only once steam generators fail to provide enough power.

Also steam engines wont turn on if there is no need for more power.
Diesel generators have lower prion. That's working fine.
Priority is for assigning vehicles, it doesn't affect anything if the machines aren't serviced by trucks. If you want to prioritize power systems, you can use balancers for either their inputs or outputs. On mine, I have oil burning boilers running into the same steam pipes as my coal boilers, but I use a pipe balancer so the steam from the oil boilers is prioritized and the coal boilers back up and shut down, but if I run out of light and heavy oil the coal boilers kick in.

There is 2 different priority settings on power generators, 1 is the one you're talking about, the other one is production. I believe they're talking about the production one, if they're not.. then that might be the issue.
I saw, that power generators have two different settings. They have tool tips. So it is clear, which one to use. That's why I'm pretty sure, that is doesn't work like intended.
yeah this is confusing to me. I have a boiler/turbine running 4 power gens, and for now just venting the low steam. I also have diesel gens, supposedly for backup. my blue nuber (max power) is currently, 2.5MW, and my usage is 1.8MW but my current PRODUCTION is only 1.5. the power gens never "ramp up" with demand. I am currently stuck with building more diesels....

is this a bug? or am I missing something?

EDIT: Bah, im dumb. can only support 2 power gens.....lol

Lol yeah I did this too, mixed up the 300KW that gets produced from 500KW of mechanical power thinking that 1MW turbine should support three generators

Try setting the main power source 2 numbers lower than the backup power source. This seems to work for me
copy paste prior settings for power generators was a bug, have u tried setting them all manually to confirm that thats not the problem?
I also suspected, that copying the setting was the problem...
That seems to be the case.
I agree. Had a similar issue:

I had 2 shafts and wanted to prefer the generators of a specific shaft. The priority settings did not work.
I also think the whole system is wonky at best.
I have this:
https://imgur.com/a/xOGcCoc

according to tooltip I have max potential output of 5+ MW, yet the system suffers from power outages.
and no, its not any fuel or steam or whatnot missing.

its generators and drive shafts and flywheels not working as intended.
the flywheels are supposedly able to store power. but they don´t.
that means if generators are not working because they "automatically " turn off when not needed, they do not spring back to life if they are needed. the flywheels just die down.

I have 5 turbines in a driveshaft line, four flywheels. and 6 generators.
and somehow that does not do the trick ?

my backup shaft has two turbines, two flywheels and 4 additional generators but that does not seem to help at all.....

Can you check that your pipes are able to handle the amount of steam?
my current setup is as follow: x3 coal boiler: x2 high turbine 2: 1 flywheel: x2 power generator: low pressure turbine 2:low pressure turbine: flywheel:power generator 2
All connected to lv3 pipes

Production priority for the 3 power turbine is 6,11,6 (to ensure hi steam converted to steam lo) and also for the pressure turbine the auto-balance is on and the other is off for each high and low pressure turbine. This seems to work.
