Disappointment in God of War – Lack of Diversity and Cultural Barriers
As a highly anticipated action-adventure game, "God of War" has impressed many players with its stunning visuals and tight combat system. However, as someone who enjoys exploring games set within different cultural backgrounds, I encountered some issues that not only impacted my gameplay experience but also raised questions about the overall design direction of the game.
Lack of Diversity

From the very beginning, I noticed a distinct lack of diversity in both characters and environments. Despite being set in a world steeped in mythological lore, the character designs and interactions lacked the breadth one would expect. Most characters followed similar templates, lacking uniqueness and depth, which made them less engaging.

Cultural Barriers and Story Engagement

Due to my limited knowledge of Norse mythology, certain characters and plot points felt foreign and distant. For example, early in the game, a character named "Baldur" was introduced, and because of my unfamiliarity with Norse mythology, I had to pause the game and search online for background information on this character. This disrupted my gameplay flow and weakened my engagement with the story.

Moreover, the game heavily uses Norse runes and other script elements, which were like reading alien text to me. Although the game provides translations, many proper nouns were not adequately explained, making it difficult for me to follow the narrative.

Confusing Opening Narratives

The opening narratives of the game also left me perplexed. While intended to create a mysterious atmosphere, the lack of sufficient backstory instead created confusion. The introductory dialogue mentioned several key concepts and characters, but for newcomers, this information felt disjointed and hard to understand.

Localization Issues

Localization problems are another significant concern. Although the dialogues were translated into the local language, certain cultural elements and proper nouns were not well-handled. In particular, when dealing with Norse mythology terms, the translations seemed rough and sometimes even used the original text, placing an additional burden on non-English-speaking players.

Conclusion

In summary, while God of War is undoubtedly a technical masterpiece, the lack of diversity, cultural accessibility, and localization shortcomings significantly detract from the overall experience. It is hoped that the development team will address these issues in future works to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience.
