I like GoW more. (personally)
but yes, RDR2 should have won Goty 2018.
I don't think its a Better game, but its a more IMPRESSIVE game, thats for sure.
A few factors that spoke in GoW's favour was, that is was a huge surprise how good it was, no one expected a complete re imagining of GoW to work this well, but somehow it did.
While with RDR2 everyone pretty much expected it to be amazing from the get go.
And it was
Bottom line for me is this:
RDR2: More content rich. Strong overall package but over-emphasis on realism over great gameplay and intuitive controls hurt its potential somewhat and makes it less accessible, but one can get used to this if they put in the time, and be richly rewarded if they do. NPC's overreact to your every move and you can often find yourself in a heap of trouble over simple misunderstandings, yikes. An incredible story and stunning graphics are this game's strongest attributes.
GOW: Less content rich, but makes for a tighter, concise, and more well-rounded package. Heaps of content isn't everything. This I think was the main determining factor. Some grindy aspects (Ahem, Muspelheim and Niflheim) hurt its potential somewhat, but at least it's optional unlike RDR2's controls. It's just a more natural feeling game to play and control your character compared to RDR2. I think perhaps the genre and setting might be more appealing to a wider audience too? This game also has an incredible story and stunning graphics, but perhaps not as much as RDR2. The story definitely isn't as long as RDR2, but it doesn't need to be. Also, Atreus can be an annoying, pompous little brat, but so are many sons to their fathers IRL so I guess that's pretty realistic.
Also what's up with the leveling menu, i played tons of rpg's. But the leveling menu in god of war is so annoying. It pissed me so off that i even put the game on story mode, so i don't need to bother with it
Also tons of my friends bought the game, and barely played 3 hours with it. Seriously this game is heavy overrated by the mass audience. I'm not saying its a bad game. But i defo would not be buying a console to play such a game
It's visuals, in terms of textures and effects are just far worse than anything else from 2018. It reuses a lot of enemies throughout the game. The loot and levelling system seems to be placebo. The story is generic, with uninteresting characters aside from the world serpent and Mimir and the 2 dwarven brothers. It legitimately feels like a linear version of Skyrim which people pick on endlessly nowadays. It's not terrible, but giving it anything beyond a 6.5/10, let alone giving it GOTY is just insane to me. All in all it's just, good, not great, just good.
Red Dead 2's only talked about negatively when people call it a "Walking simulator" because they weren't patient enough to get passed the first 4 missions to realise how much there is beyond that. It's a shame at how many people call it "boring", it's no more boring than a game like Last of Us, Half Life 2, Halo, Uncharted 4.
Regardless, I'm keen to play Ragnarok when it comes to PC, but I'm not expecting it to win me over. I do personally think both games are overrated and it's the only highly rated game I've played where I think the people giving it good ratings are trolling, but ya know.
Gow is more of an action game. I found the "emotional" story pretty contrived and the art direction fairly uninspired. The combat is good but repetitive and basically similar to darksiders (lt attack, heavy attack combos with blocking counters and chosen activated attacks and a rage mode). The open world exploration elements and puzzles are ok, but mostly lifted from other games. I'd give it an 8.5/10
RDR 2 is a 10/10
