I loved the first 3, but this one suffers from the "muh Sony unskipable cutscenes" that only spew out exposition with 0 interactivity. Gameplay feels like... Onimusha Down of Dreams, but you have some kind of weird sudo RPG system with items and stuff... In addition to the OG weapon upgrade system. Few recycled mini bosses, enemy variety is not the best.
It's a well made game, but NOT AS good or a MASTERPIECE as everyone is trying to sell it as.
Dunno man, I am the type of person that likes the story to be part of the interactivity of the game. Not sit and being stuffed pretentious ♥♥♥♥ down my throat by some Hollywood wannabes.
Or at the very least OG Blizzard style - short but rich in quality after the world has sparked your interest it feels like a reward.
"Again there should be a middle ground between positive and negative reviews, but ultimately I've chosen negative after 800+ hours of this.
1. There is a rewarding combat system at the end; but getting there requires you spend far more time than any reasonable person is going to spend. The reason for this is that you have to overcome numerous bad design choices and (seemingly, but not really) clunky controls and combat. Learning every single little quirk in the enemies and the fighting system itself is a chore. I don't actually agree with others that say the enemies are damage sponges. If you know what you are doing you can dispatch enemies extremely quickly on any difficulty.
2. Runic spamming is too effective. Almost all new players just lazily use runic attacks, and then drool with their mouths wide open and brains turned off in-between cooldowns just mashing r1 r1 r1 r2. This is due to the game not incentivising the use of normal non-runic attacks, or having good tutorials for how those attacks can be used in different ways (yes there are tips during the loading screens, but thats not good enough). The only time the game even remotely moves away from this is during the valkyrie fights. Which is precisely why people find them tougher. Its the one time the game asks you to not runic spam and actually think and experiment. The combat system never really asks much of you, even on GMGOW and GMGOW+ difficulties.
3. No the story is not some profound masterpiece; it is mediocre at best. The only redeeming factor is the dialogue (which is actually very good) and the narrative, but not the plot itself. Massive sections of story that are unskippable is not good game design when replaying this game; and the very first time you play the game on a new steam account, it will not let you skip any cutscene whatsoever. Its just another typical Sony story game. Long sections of holding up to watch Kratos just slowly walk, is not good gameplay; in fact it isn't even gameplay in the first place. These sections could be told in succinct cutscenes (which more portantly you could then skip on later playthroughs). The Freya walking sections for example.
4. THIS KID. He cannot be controlled precisely in combat. The more you use him, the more you realise he hinders you. And when you setup enemies in certain ways so as to deal with them how YOU want to deal with them, he will come swooping in and start hitting them or tripping them up or strangling them, thereby ruining your precise setup. For example many times I want to perform a wall pin kill; but THIS KID will start strangling the enemy, and while the enemy is being strangled by him, you cannot perform a wall pin kill on it. The whole design of the kid prevents disciplined and precise combat. Many times he will not shoot an arrow when you want him to because he will be stuck in another animation off-screen. Other times he wont fire the electric or light arrows because he will be in the middle of firing a regular arrow, and he cannot cancel that animation. Again, lazy and imprecise design. I hate this kid for both story reasons and gameplay reasons.
5. Ok, good stuff now. The graphics, seeing as its essentially a ps4 game, are excellent and the game runs very well IF you have the hardware for it. Environments, geometry, textures, character details, enemy details, armours, etc, everything I would say is very well done. Kratos looks excellent; especially during rage, all his veins pop out. It looks amazing. Ironically the game plays very well with mouse + keyboard, though I myself play with controller. In-fact some of the fastest movement tech can really only be done with the kb+m.
Sound design is excellent and gives a sense of impact to the combat. Sound cues are there but can sometimes be lost in the chaos of a fight, even THE KID'S annoying voice is actually a good sound cue because it always happens a certain amount of time before you take damage from an attack.
There are hundreds of other issues the game has, far too many to cover here, but ultimately it is far too much frustration for the rewards at the end."
masterpiece no, a solid 80 percent game worth playing, sure.
its a perfect intro game for elden ring,
sadly myself i played elden ring just before it, and combat on gow felt meh in comparison, but its decent if you take that measure out. its similar though and simpler, so thats why i say its a perfect intro game before elden ring
I honestly don't know what are you talking about. I'm playing the gmgow difficulty and I can say that EVERY move counts, not only runic, which of course are great. I feel it's so balanced for all the elements you have to master (arrows, dodge, block axe etc.)
The choice to limit the weapon(s) you have is in my opinion just sublime, you can really experiment with axe, shield etc.
For me is one of the best combat system in recent years.
lol,
I did one stream and it was so boring and bad I literally forgot about the game a few days later,
every time I see it in my library I'm like, " I have that game !? " LOL !!
Anyways, this game is a horrible trash mess of a ton of 'features and mechanics', and total lack of fun and playability ..
It is simply too convoluted and clunky to play, it's almost funny how bad it is lol..
Anyways, all you gotta do is look at the first 3 'original' games and compare them to this and it becomes obvious (if it wasn't already),
the first 3 play smoothly based on simple mechanics and the fun-factor of great controls and straight-forward action,
this game has all kinds of variations of attacks, different mechanics, this and that etc but the devs forgot people actually need to be able to play the game not remember 1000 + 1 different button presses to do completely redundant things
This game is more or less a joke and a clear example of how popular something can get simply based on hype, marketing and elite-level marketing and investing
I will say though a high level of effort was put into the scenery so if you're in the mood for a 'trip in the woods' on your tv screen this would fit the bill nicely..
