You guys have to remember, Kratos is only a demi-god. I'd say he's more bulky and capable of more strength, he just lacks the stamina.
Teaching his son to fight, letting him play a bigger role each time he improves, etc. supports the idea that he is still a big deal.
The fights against Baldur demonstrate how much Kratos has grown, Baldur being one of the strongest war gods had to rely on his curse to survive fights where Kratos doesn't even use his full abilities (and also not being really rage fueled most of the time).
If the 2018 version was as enraged as "back in the days" he would wreck his old version every single time.
Kratos seems to channel loss into rage and losing himself to rage is something he continuously tries to avoid doing in this game. Just sticking to the early game of GOW4, He admonishes Atreus for giving into anger. He quite clearly holds himself back in the Stranger fight until the Stranger tries to find out what Kratos is hiding which is when Kratos enables Spartan Rage, probably for the first time in many years. He is out of practice and the anger that broke him out of melancholy was out of concern about losing his son.
Good post. Speaking as a dad myself I can tell you nothing gets you madder than someone messing with your kids. THAT is a whole different type of rage lemme tell you.
Since he only half god and half human it would make sense he getting weaker with age. Powers of a god but still is human.
Also you could say Kratos is holding back trying to set an example for his son.
