When to do Side quests?

Without giving spoiler(please) Can someone tell me like when you hit the mid point in the story with decent enough armours unlocked at the shop and to take a break and do the side quests.

Of course I've already been doing some side quests as the story goes but I want to do the other not so blended into the main campaign side missions

In my opinion it's best when you revive Mimir, the extra dialogue both for the sidequests and the boat is great.

Ah gotcha, I'm going for the fire realm to do the arena and get some materials for the rank 4 armors then I'll go for the chisel.
As a sidenote, if an enemy's health is purple in a sidequest / area, then you can leave and come back later when you have better gear.

Depends what difficulty you are playing on. If it's the lower two then whenever you want, the highest two can be a bit challenging early on.

Well I tried doing a side quest early where I touch a (Reaver Gate?) a Portal, creatures with purple health bars run out, bum rush, and one hit kill me! I'm assuming this is a level up and come back later challenge.

Yes, if the health is purple then the enemy is too high, come back later.

I do them as I find them regardless of purple health. It's not that hard. Yet.
