Yes. I recommend at least watching it on Youtube. Whoever says no, is wrong.

Wrong. It's very much a sequel. There are a ton of references to past events and even flashbacks from God of War 3.

there's still people who havent [played? bruh

Actually, you shouldn't. You can even be dissapointed a bit by Kratos previously felt like an actual god of war now feels more like a strong man with an axe. The game is still very good tho.

I would disagree with most people here, playing at least 1-3 will definitely enhance the experience of Kratos as a character and how he has come and why he makes some of the decisions he does in the game. If you don't care about things like that then no, you'll be ok and enjoy the game but it really helps playing at least 1-3.

No. I have not finished GOW3 because in my opinion it was not good enough but anyway it is very clear that this game is a new start

for many games series i honestly like playing the newest most advanced one

add to that, the 2018 game is meant to take it into another direction

if you wanna play in a few hours, do it

rather than get a hold of the trilogy and beat them all first

No.. The devs completely forgot that Kratos is "wearing" his previous family ashes on his body. Kratos died in the seventh generation. This is more of a reboot than a continuation of previous entries.

So "spoiler stuff and callbacks" about him being the God of War isn't a sequel to GoW 3?

Not really, I haven't played the first three and just looked stuff up on the internet before playing this one.

So basically:

Simple answer is no. It does help with some lore but its pretty standalone.

Here is a simple recap. Ares tricked Kratos into killing his family, kratos got pissed and killed Ares, then got betrayed by Zeus who was effected by Pandora's box that Kratos opened to get the power to kill Ares. Then Kratos killed almost the entire Greek Pantheon in revenge.

Finally the most important part is to keep in mind that Zeus is the father of Kratos. This will play a part in GOW 4. Kratos killed his own father.

This is the main story. The extra part I'd add is that after Kratos murdered the whole temple (including his wife and kid), the oracle warned him not to enter the temple cast a spell on Kratos, having his wife and kid's ashes to cover his skin forever (that's why Kratos is ashen white).

Kratos' death is the end of GoW 3 but not the whole story. In 2020, they released a comic book to fill the gap between GoW 3 and this game. Long story short: Kratos finds out that because of his blood and rage, he is cursed to walk the earth forever.

There are a lot of people who see Kratos in this game as "an old, calm man mellowed by the passing years" but actually, it's more like Kratos, being ashamed by his actions, moves to a remove place to "test" himself and to control his unending rage.

No. Kratos was an angry Spartan who got boned by fate and the gods and swore revenge. Killed a bunch of mythical Greek monsters on his way to killing some gods, including Ares and becoming the new 'God of War'. That's games 1-3. Between 3 and 4 he apparently moved to the Nordic countries and chilled for like, say, 3000 years, and they married and had 'boy'.

Spoliers below.

GOW 1,he gets saved and f-up by Ares,Frenzied Kratos kills his family and gets "cursed" and pale,Gods promise him stuff if he kills Ares,in the end he open's Pandora's Box and kills Ares ,becoming the new God of war,the Gods end up NOT delivering on their promises,he gets pissed off,his suicide is prevented by the gods.

GOW 2:Pandora box f-up the minds of the Greek Gods,Kratos allies with the Titans(enemies of the gods) after being betrayed by Zeus and he "changes time"to alter outcome.Titan vs god battle begins at the end.

GOW 3:He gets pissed off even more...... eventually gets betrayed by everyone, kills Titans and Gods left right and Center........until none left.

Story summary. There's shorter ones if you like.

No, not needed.

Kratos killed some very weak iterations of Greek gods and now he's raising the boy.
