Kratos was an angry guy who beat up Greek myths.
He beat them all up, moved to Norway or something and is raising "boy"

According to Creative Director Cory Barlog, the opening of the game (Kratos chopping down a tree and burning it) is a metaphor for them burning the past God of War's, as this iteration is a fresh start.

So no, not necessary at all. There are a handful of references that you might miss and a couple scenes might not hit as hard but going in fresh is just fine.

Simple answer is no. It does help with some lore but its pretty standalone.

Here is a simple recap. Ares tricked Kratos into killing his family, kratos got pissed and killed Ares, then got betrayed by Zeus who was effected by Pandora's box that Kratos opened to get the power to kill Ares. Then Kratos killed almost the entire Greek Pantheon in revenge.

Finally the most important part is to keep in mind that Zeus is the father of Kratos. This will play a part in GOW 4. Kratos killed his own father.

there are references to the old games.

but the old games are genereally your family got killed, and their ashes are stuck to you, hence why youre so pale, and so you became angry, and started chopping down gods across the greek mythology. get killed a bunch of times go to hell. escape.. casual stuff you see

This game was made as a 'fresh reboot'. You can definitely play and enjoy the story by itself, but there are nods to older titles in the story that make you appreciate the game more.
