Well, the original games were Santa Monica's take on action games of the era: Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, etc. So you had crazy spectacle, combo counter to track your 100+ hit judggles, etc.
The latest game is Santa Monica's take on action games of this era: namely Souls-type things. It may or may not be your cup of tea, but you can see why they opted to go in that direction.
the gameplay is as good as it needs to be for an interactive story game
is GOW an interactive story game? ouch
But the first the walking dead has always a place in my heart for the beautiful story but now that i think about it, i guess when it first released it was quite unique on it's own, gameplay wise and only later that style with many games became "something already seen".
The episodic formula was something new in those times if i remember right.
You literally just described all TT games that have QTE's and no open ended combat mechanics like GOW has. That score you gave makes sense when it comes to story, but nowhere close when it comes to gameplay mechanics.
They had already done it prior with Jurassic Park and Back to the Future, same episodic and gameplay mechanics, just a different licensed franchise. Stories are good, but exact same controls make the gameplay subpar once you've already played one or two of their titles.
you completely missed the point lol
guess you admit that GOW has the gameplay of a Telltale game lul
No wonder so many players throw the towel after an hour or two.
Its not because its sadistically unfair/hard. Its because theyre all soft, dumb, instagratification ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Just your standard idiot consumer. That believes 500 dollar hardware beats a 3090
Oh i understand the point, no one should listen to someone who thinks that Telltale games play like GOW. Here's the difference between the two games gameplay mechanics then since you believe they play the same;
TWD
Scripted Combat Gameplay:

GOW
Free Combat Gameplay:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mda6G4g5p_o
Kind of a HUGE difference in being able to freely change the way you fight & defeat your foes vs. always following the scripted sequence.
May as well talk about how much the combat sucks in Forza compared to Twisted Metal while we're comparing these apples and oranges..
Mainly because someone here thinks Telltales Walking Dead interactive gameplay is the same as GOW's, and also thinks TWD scores higher than GOW because of it. Here's a clue, it isn't me!
Games and their perceived worth are more than just the sum of their parts.
My last few personal GOTY picks would have been of the visual novel/adventure style also, (Detroit Become Human would be the closest example of being the same as TWD) and I've enjoyed them a lot more than recent AAA blockbusters, including God of War which I eventually lost interest in.
To each their own.
