Is this just Trepang/Half-Life for Redditors?

Not sure if I should get this. This is one of the more talked about FPSs recently, but it basically looks like the chungus version of the two games I mentioned.

What is the game about exactly? Is the gameplay Weenie Hut Jr tier or relatively complex? Ty for answers.

Putting aside the epithets, it's more like FEAR, but without the slow-mo. And no, it is not an easy game on the harder difficulties. The enemy have fairly intelligent AI and you can get deleted quickly if you're caught out, but you've got plenty of tools to delete them in turn.

Sure, I tried to put it in nicer terms but I guess people don't like that.

The game looks like a trite, dystopian science fiction FPS with no discernible features that differentiate it from the dozens of other shooters in this genre. I am inferring that it has to compensate for its shortcomings in gameplay by appealing to mainstream social media gaming preferences in a bid for attention, such as having a quirky name like "Selaco," and featuring a female protagonist with a safe-edgy personality.

Trepang and Half-Life on the other hand, are dystopian, sci-fi shooters with their own identities, identities that were not made to appease mainstream gamers such as those found on Reddit.

Essentially, I am wondering if my inferences are incorrect and the game has defining features that make it fun. I hope that is more understandable to the readers :).

Selaco uses flat sprites instead of fancy models, has old school visuals, is considered a 'retro game', has complex levels that many casual players would get lost in, uses an ancient engine, uses a weird blood color, uses an extremely cumbersome approach to 3D (voxels) and more...

Knowing all of that; what exactly makes you assume we care about reaching the mainstream? Selaco would have been a vastly different game if that's something we care about.

Trepang2 and Half-Like are infinitely more mainstream than Selaco will ever be and everything they do is much safer. No shade to Trepang2 or anything, I love that game to bits and the devs kick ass, but saying it doesn't appeal to the mainstream is utterly bizarre to me. People love military themes, people love modern recognizable firearms, people love near-constant action with minimal downtime, and SCP / Backrooms that the game takes inspiration from are extremely popular on the internet and especially Reddit. Trepang2 hits all of those boxes and I'm certain even people who do not care about indie games, could easily grab Trepang2 and enjoy it.

How does Trepang2 *NOT* appease to mainstream gamers??? It's a massive hit for a reason.

That is an interesting response and I will take it into account. I think I'll wait for more unbiased responses before pulling the trigger though.

I don't think it's exactly unreasonable to compare these three shooters. Trepang is an indie game and one of the main competitors to this and I've heard this game get compared to Half-Life. Trepang's atmosphere looks way more dark and gritty than this game whereas this game looks cartoony and pg so that's why I think it might be more mainstream.
