Does using the scarab gun disable achievements?
Propflew to grab it in a legit run, I'd like to ♥♥♥♥ around with it but I don't want to get locked out of progression.

Eldin: It sounds like it will still be pickupable, but picking it up, will flag the savefile as cheat, meaning no more achievements on that save file.

What do you mean with "considered a cheat"? Does that mean it will disable achievements in future progression if you pick it up, even with a "legit" method?

Or do you mean that the only thing is that it will kill you on a SMF run?

Also, what do you mean with kill, when firing the weapon or when picking up? It could be wise to make it so it kills only on fire, for those that wants to 100% the game on SMF and picking up the scarab upgrade as a "souvenir" kind of.

Actually, I had to pick it up (using the barrel against wall trick) in my Exploration mode run, just to have any chance to complete it.

And the DPS LFG achievement can be a bit difficult if you don't have scarab. YES its possible to spam acid grenades to get it too, but those are the only 2 methods.

I personally think, flagging it as a cheat is a bad decision. Just make it kill on higher difficulties, that should be enough. Or maybe, flag it as only available on Exploration.

Or maybe as a modifier: "Disable certain overpowered upgrades" - makes so the scarab and teddy11 upgrade kills on use.

The Scarab mode is being flagged as a cheat. It was always intended to be, that is not going to change.

It's a joke weapon that went out of hand and I'm a little tired of seeing people use it on legit playthroughs and still claim victory like it's some sort of achievement. It makes the game devoid of any sort of engagement and makes actual completions feel meaningless for those for deliberately avoided using the Scarab Mode on Selaco Admiral difficulty or Selaco Must Fall mode. it's a nod to Halo 2's overpowered hidden weapon, so I am not going to weaken it either, that would ruin the whole joke of this weapon.

You weren't meant to find this gun without cheats, because it's literally designed to be a cheat.

It will be addressed in the next patch and nothing is going to change my mind on that.

You want to keep using it as a cheat? Ask a modder to revert the change for you. But I am not keeping it in the core game like this.

Would this in any way flag my save file/lock off progression in this coming update? I haven't been using it since you suggested not to, but it's still technically unlocked since I've just left it in the mod station without equipping it. Would suck to lose my save, although if I get not wanting a proper playthrough to have access to the gun.

It will only be flagged on semi-frequent usage. I would never flag someone's playthrough because a player got curious and wanted to see what's out there. That would be mean!

Ty! Also since you're seeing this, I've been really enjoying the game so far on my first go-through! Admiral's super punishing but I played tf out of the demo back when that released to get ready. Selaco's mad cool.

Thank you, I'm happy to hear that!

We are dropping a massive patch tomorrow that'll make things even better

Shamless edit: Remember to leave a review if you can. We're trying to hit 2000 reviews by the weekend!

Nexxtic:

I do understand you are tired of them used on legit playthrough and then trying to "brag" about it.

But flagging it as a "accolade" at end of chapter, or in some way show this weapon was used in the run (so people cannot hide the usage of the weapon and then stream the game or whatever), is a much better idea, than totally disable all achievements just because this weapon was too frequently used.

Maybe even on the intermissions screens: "SCARAB MODE ENABLED".

Im not saying people should be able to run this on adminiral with a "cheaty" weapon, and then claim some sort of victory.

But for those that have slight trouble on exploration mode, don't take away their only chance to enjoy the game. Think it as more, "You are playing on a very easy mode, and still have some trouble with combat, here is some help with a OP weapon".

What about:
Flag it as cheat (disables all achievements) on all difficulties except exploration. On exploration, only literal cheats (sv_cheats 1) will count as disabling.

In the same way, if a blocking wall is inserted to prevent the collection without noclip, make this wall disappear on exploration mode.

In this way, some achievements could in the future be restricted to higher difficulties, and then the Scarab would be out of question. (like, "Complete the game on Adminiral difficulty" achievement)

-------------------------------------------------------

And I wan't to say I just love the game, and gave it a well positive review, but as I wrote in the review, the difficulty levels is slighly spicier than they actually claim to be.

I used it a tad because I found it on a blind playthrough, I was just trying to get out of the map! I cried laughing when I turned the corner and it was there. Whatever you do with the thing, thanks for putting it in there in the first place, one of my favorite gaming moments in modern memory.

Welp, all I did upon getting it was give it a testrun in the firing range, then switched back to normal, figuring it was a bit too OP to use seriously... :P Got me the DPS achievement unintentionally (probably not hard to get via Acid or combos, either, so eh).

Well, judging from the comments thus far, I guess that won't penalize me while I try and beat the final content that's out there for now, having just done a optional/secret level and not yet having gone past the endgame/point of no return.

The more you talk the more I hate you as a developer. You sound like a try hard that only thinks a souls run with no armor level 1, with no summons. Is the only way to play. You laugh at people in the comments when they ask to add a difficulty option to change mid game. Or when they said that the game needs to be balanced. And now your crying because people using the gun YOU hidden in YOUR game.

Maybe instead of acting like such an entitled kid. And crying because there using the gun YOU decided to be HIDDEN as an EASTER EGG. And just I don't know have it only able to be found on the easiest difficultly. That way it doesn't break the spirits of the kids who we're complaining that there hard mode runs felt "meaningless" as you said. That's like you saying you should patched any glitches people are using to speed run the game. Because it makes normal playthroughs that everyone has done "meaningless". Your logic makes no sense.

You keep trying to appeal to this very small try hard crowd for some reason.

You can criticize me and my approach to game development, but please maintain a respect tone while doing so.

I'm not warning you again.

EDIT:
You laugh at people in the comments when they ask to add a difficulty option to change mid game

This has never happened. I've admitted that not being able to change difficulty mid-game is a huge problem that needs to be looked into. I never laughed at anyone and would be very interested to see an example of where this happened.

https://steamcommunity.com/id/henmera/recommended/1592280/#developer_response

Or [laugh at people] when they said that the game needs to be balanced.

This also never happened. We've launched a patch 2 weeks ago that addresses difficulty complaints, and are a few hours away from launching a major patch that addresses things further.

Please do not make things up to put me in a bad light. Again, Iast warning.

There's nothing disrespectful about my comment. And we both know that. So man just stop. If you don't like criticism of any kind man just pick and choose what you interact with in the forums. And let criticisms like mine just roll off your back. Your a game developer. And good one at that. Your going to get criticisms that's just part of the business.
