Hardcore mode too hardcore?
I love playing hardcore modes as it adds much more tension and realism. I am used to not saving and letting games auto save at suitable checkpoints. However I was expecting an auto save after the first level transition, but upon death was put back to the first gun pickup in the previous level. Is this correct?

Check the workshop, there's a mod that might be your thing.

Which mod would this be?

Respectfully, I like it when a game respects my time. I can't always get to a save point before life happens, like the power going out, or having to book it to an emergency for work.

Can we at least get a hardcore mode where quicksaving is allowed for 400 cr? Or just a hardcore mode that allows 1 save per 10 minutes or something? I'd like to experience the changes to campaign that it says it has in the description.

Well... It is called "hardcore mode"...

Respectfully, manual saving is part of the stakes.

But because we allow for modding, there are mods that fix it. Try this!

EDIT: I have not tested it myself

Count your blessings. At least you don't need an always active internet connection, and one bad disconnect may result in the death of your hardcore character. Its why I don't play hardcore in Diablo games, online.

Except it doesn't though, it's saving by campfire 🤓

Which I'd be cool with if the campfire wasn't sometimes on the other side of a 10 minute hike.

Thanks for the mod. I'll tweak the params myself to future proof it.

Consider uploading it to the workshop if you want. I think a lot of people would want this! Make sure to credit getphobo given how he made the original.

Hey! I'm really enjoying the game so far, and like the other hardcore features, but I also have some similar practical life concerns that make saving outside of the vending machines kind of necessary.
I tried the mod, and does indeed allow me to quicksave... however, the loading while in Hardcore mode apparently does not work the same. Using quickload while in Hardcore opens the save menu, and the quicksaves do not appear there.

Being a GZDoom veteran was still not enough to save me, as even after I tried to set up custom binds using
bind f6 "save quicksave"
and
bind f9 "load quicksave"
that still didn't seem to do the trick.

I understand the design decisions, and overall this isn't a huge deal, I guess I could just go back and play without Hardcore mode, but I really wish there was a way to make this work!

Hi,

I am the mod's author who didn't manage to get it uploaded to Steam for whatever reason -- Steam wouldn't give me a proper error message/information on what they believe to be wrong. Nexxtic, feel free to upload it for me. A 512x512 thumbnail and a short description is included in the ZIP file.

Anyway, quicksave reloading *should* work without any necessary rebinds, just using the default F9 key.

The quicksaves also *should* appear in the F3 menu, but it's possible you will have to restart the whole app for some reason. I had the same issue on my first try, but later on, everything would work just fine on all successive replays. Must be some Steam thing, I guess.

Hope this helps.

Hey, getphobo! I tried it again and am still getting the same issue. Even after defaulting my controls, I can quicksave, but when I go to quickload using F9, it just brings up the regular load menu -- no quicksaves are selectable. It does the same thing when I press F3. Notably, this is different behavior than when I'm not in Hardcore mode, where the quickload simply asks for confirmation before loading the most recent quicksave.

You're right. My mod seems to only work the way it's supposed to with cheat mode enabled, i.e., you have to enter "sv_cheats 1" on the console before campaign start.

For an existing savegame, you may also modify the globals.json inside the savegame file, and change the value for "sv_cheats" from "false" to "true". After you load that modified game file, my mod will work as intended, but the game will register that you've cheated.

I have no idea whether that will disable Steam achievements, though.

Ah, thanks! That makes sense. I'm not too worried about the Steam achievements in any case. I wasn't able to spot a globals.json in the save game folder, however, and I'm not really sure how to change the game state. I'm not very far in, so I suppose I could restart, but do you know where that might be found?

The globals.json resides inside the savegame file ("save#.zds" where # is a number) which itself is a ZIP archive, only it has a ZDS ending instead of ZIP.

So, in order to edit the globals.json, you'll need to open the ZDS file the way you would open a ZIP file. You might have to rename it to save#.zip or save#.zds.zip temporarily, if your software doesn't recognize the archive otherwise.

Extract the globals.json, open and edit in a text editor, then copy it back to the savegame archive. That should do the trick.

Ohh, right, okay, I guess I didn't realize .zds files worked the same way as pk3s and zips, I'd never tried to open one before! I'll do that. Thanks!

Just wanted to confirm for anyone else reading this thread, I did as getphobo suggested: extracted the files (using 7zip, but others will work) in my save0.zds file at
C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\Selaco-EA
I then opened the globals.json file in a text editor, found "sv_cheats: false" and changed it to "sv_cheats: true" then saved the file, selected all of the files and made them a new archive, then renamed that archive to save0.zds and replaced the old save file (after I'd renamed the old one).
This effectively enabled "cheats" on my already-existing save file, and allowed the mod to function as intended.
