The old story is the more sandbox type where there are less story quests and you get random quests to do from a board in the main town.
I’m currently playing the new story and I’m planning on doing the old story after. That’s the better order for me. But if you want to ignore story and focus on whatever you want in whatever order, then you might like the old story more. You can still do what you want in the new story by ignoring the quests btw.
Note: I started before the big update in the last week, so maybe that was the issue behind these experiences (Played Easy Secret of the Island with DLC checked.)
I did see the developer mention some achievements are exclusive to the legacy story. So you’re right about that.
