I lost my axe
New to the game, I don't have an axe and can't get logs to make an axe. Any ideas?

The axe should be in front of your house when you arrive.
If it isn't, , reload the game and start an new save-file

If you don't want to, because you lose too much time, you can always go for the golden tools that you find on your and the neighbour island. Take some iron keys with you and go treasure box- hunting
