The "Real" How-To Fix Luxor: Amun Rising Guide!

This game was a huge part of my childhood growing up. I absolutely played the crap out of it, and was so excited when I saw it on Steam. So, I went and bought the Luxor Collection with the disappointment that this game was not working. So, I went and looked into not only how to fix it, but also why it was not working.

When Steam acquired this game, they received a copy with what appears to be a ".SWF" file as like a splash screen. As some of you know, Flash reached it's End-Of-Life on December 30, 2020. This is causing anyone who is currently purchasing the game to run into some errors, and "Not being able to run as Administrator" because the executable is launching a Flash Player file and is considered "Unsafe".

The solution? This handy-dandy little guide that will get your game up and running again. I dug around the basement and found the Luxor 4-in-1 game disk that I had grown up on. I ran some tests to figure out what files we needed to run the game, and realized that Steam has all of those already.

Step 1: Open Steam, and find your Luxor: Amun Rising Game
Step 2: Right click on the Luxor: Amun Rising Icon, and under "Manage" click the "Browse Local Files" button
Step 3: Find the files named "Flash"(.ocx), "game"(.dmg), "Splash"(.swf), and "LuxorAR"(.exe)
Note: You may see the part in parenthesis, you might not. It's alright either way.
Step 4: You can delete these files if you so wish, or move them to another folder, or if you do see those parenthesis, change it to .xxx2
Note: The .xxx portion is whatever portion you see in the parenthesis, if you modify the .swf file, change it to .swf2 for example.
Step 5: Go to "https://www.mediafire.com/file/6apppu5s0flsdlg/Luxor_AR.zip/file" (Copy and paste into Web Browser and remove quotations, because steam is currently blocking links) and download the (.zip) folder
Note: This contains the executable that I used during my childhood, and has not been modified in any way by me.
Step 6: Go to where your file was downloaded, right click the file, and click "Extract All...", and click the Extract button.
Note: In Windows 11, this option may be under the "More Options" button
Step 7: You're almost done! Go into the extracted folder called "LuxorAR" and copy the "LuxorAR"(.exe) file.
Step 8: Paste it into the folder where you deleted/changed/modified the "Flash"(.ocx), "game"(.dmg), "Splash"(.swf), and "LuxorAR"(.exe) files.
Step 9: Close all of the folders, Open Steam, and click the "Play" button!
Step 10: (And I really mean this one!) Enjoy!

Any idea on how one would fix Luxor: Amun Rising HD or Luxor 2 HD? Those ones do not work for me. I have tried everything from downloading pirated copy and replacing legitimate Steam game .exe with that pirated one (which worked for Luxor Evovled), redownloading and reinstalling many versions of Visual C++ Runtime, reinstalling DirectX, adding DLLs to game directory, running compatibility modes on all versions, limited colors in .exe properties, running as administrator.. Nothing has worked - Running either of the two games normally says the game couldn't be started properly with an error 0xc000007b - When you start them as administrator their processes start but get terminated immediately. I'm sad that I can't play those games anymore.

Um, I have not had issues running those in recent history. It was working for Win 10 and Win 11 for those HD Versions.

Depending on which Visual Studio C++ installers you ran, there's a chance you ran an incompatible one. I would recommend following the Microsoft guide if you haven't already with the error code search. At this point, I'd also verify your steam game files (clearing the directory and basically resetting), and re-use my patch as well, to make the install as fresh and clean as possible, and hopefully make things work.

There is a chance if you're still running an older OS like 7 or XP, maybe try researching if you're locked on a 32 Bit OS Install, which wouldn't support 64 bit games. This would mean that unfortunately, unless you can acquire a newer system with that kind of Architecture support, the games will be unplayable. The instructions for how to check this were also addressed in that Microsoft guide.

If that's not the case, the only other recommendation I could make is to back up all programs/data if possible and do a fresh install if your computer will let you, granted your PC is using x64 architecture for 64 bit games. I recommend this as a last resort option, try everything else before resorting to this. I am not liable for any data loss you may encounter with this potential solution.

I used to play this game with my mother. I mean... I showed the game and since she loved "mouse games" such as solitaire and mahjong, she loved the game as well!
She passe away in 2012, so... Playing this game means so much to me.
