For almost a reverse of Metal Slug, could go back to the XCOM spinoffs XCOM Interceptor (space fighter combat) and XCOM Enforcer (3rd person shooter)
See Halo series' RTS Halo Wars and its isometric shooter Halo: Spartan Assault.
I played and didn't much like Command and Conquer Renegade, which tried a 1st/3rd person shooter spin on C&C.
More recently Deep Rock Galactic (3rd person shooter) spun off into a Vampire: Survivors type game DRG: Survivors with a digging mechanic, and fans of the initial title screamed bloody murder. :D
The soundtrack is fire, though!

Ok i booted it up, and i ran into an issue of not being able to switch weapons, and after some googling i saw that the issue is the iso itself? wtf? damn, but from what i played, yeah its aight! it looks kinda bad tho', the stylized characters did not translated to 3D super well, but its an interesting take on a 3D MG, and i gotta say, i LOVE how they did the grenade reticle, that is super helpful and honestly a bit ahead of its time.
Oh y'know what, thats probably it, looking at the controls it just told me ''L2 to swap weapons'', didn't know it was a combo, will try that later!
