As far as the gameplay goes, Metal Slug Tactics looks to borrow a bit from the XCOM remake. We're told characters in MST will unlock new guns and perks as the game progresses, much as your forces in XCOM do.

Also available on mobile platforms.

The graphics put me more in mind of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (or FFT A-2), though the gameplay there is more swords'n'sorcery than guns'n'explosives.

Don't play XCOM. The RNG is completely rigged with 'artificial difficulty'. You'll just get frustrated, if you have the IQ to notice these things.

I recommend Fire Emblem: Awakening on 3DS and Advance Wars on GBA (there's a remake for Switch too, but I haven't tried it).

I will say Disgaea, there are a bunch of games on Steam and the first one usually go on sale, so you can get it very cheap.

Into The Breach a little?

Yeah, I would say much more like Into the Breach, and less like XCom.
Seems to me that the main design decision is that every outcome is deterministic. The only randomness comes from procedural generation, and enemy actions - and enemy reactions can also be predicted a little bit.

It's more like solving puzzles than taking risks. I would say, the main differences with Into the Breach, outside of the aesthetics of course, are:
- the synergies between the characters, with the sync action and all the ways it can impact how many actions you can do per turn,
- bigger maps, more enemies, more action possibilities and ways to order them during the turn, and overall a bit too much information to always be on the look for the absolute optimal move like in ItB. It's really good I think, it offers a different kind of gameplay where you accept the average-good move more easily,
- more character improvement during a run, I would say, especially through the adrenaline system.

The closest thing you'll get is Pathway:

Personally I didn't like it that much

If you don't mind RPG aspects or RPGs in tactics style gameplay then
  • Fire emblem - Sizeable roster of unique characters, no unique skills. Those game usually go for mid to grand scale conflicts. You can start with any game, I highly recommed TH, Sacred stones(or FE 7), Awakening.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics - iit's one of the first games in this style, many praise this game
  • Disgaea - it's RPG in tactics style combat. However those game require some amount of grinding to progress at least till 6th game. There quite a lot of meta humor about RPGs tropes.
As for which game to start with, you can play any game since they don't have direct connections. My personal recommendations are the 1st (for the characters), 2nd, or 4th (for the story). If you want to play only one, then go with the 5th.
  • Triangle stategy - similiar to Final Fantasy Tactics in terms of gameplay, many compare it to fire emblem games due to story structure but unlike FE games this game battles take place on smaller scale

Don't pay him attention. Play XCOM EW and have a blast. Keep in mind this is a game doesn't hold your hand. I recommend checking a Base Building guide because is the most important thing in the early game. It will give you the necessary resources.

The RNG thing is a stupid meme that scares most of new players and there are mechanics that increases the hit percentage

You can try Warriors of the Nile 1 and 2, its basically this but on a Rogue-Like format.

Fae Tactics is also pretty cool, similar to Final fantasy Tactics.

There is also Wargrove 1 and 2.

Or if you want something in 3D you can try Valkyria chronicels (minus Revolution)

XCOM and XCOM 2 are fantastic, can put a good 500 hours into them.

this plays a lot like the original XCOM: ufo defense to me, probably even more than the firaxis games did

Don't let the "cover" mechanics confuse you into thinking this is much like "X-Com" at all. This game is VERY similar to "Into the Breach" with a little bit of "Disgaea" mixed in, and those should be your best comparison points for other games within the genre that you'd probably really enjoy.
