Just so you know it takes a bit in the story to get to where you can unlock those.

You can also get clay from the farm biome. You'll see little different colored patches on the ground. You can equip your shovel and it will give you a prompt to dig. You should unlock the farm biome before the canyon one, though the canyon has more plentiful clay.

Based on their other posts, if they want clay for upgrading the workbench I don't think they have the canyon tiles yet. So yeah, farm tiles.
