The controls atm are utter $h!t£ ... I've been a pro climber for many years and have been climbing all over the world 30+ years

I do agree the controls are quite difficult to get a hang of, but it isn't game pad only. Using wasd and left and right mouse button to grip/ungrip. For me, it clicked when I enabled something called manual limb selection. Once I did that, the controls did not feel as clunky, due to the fact I could manually (space scrollwheel) select the limbs I needed as I climbed. I hate how they state "We recommend to play with automatic limb selection for a smooth and natural gameplay" when the automatic selection does the exact opposite.. but I am rambling, I recommend you give it a try with the manual mode in gameplay settings, as it makes the game so much better.
