I have a soft spot for psychological games with a retro aesthetic, the weirder they are, the more I enjoy them. You can complete the game in 40 minutes which is admittedly short considering the slow text, but in the end, I care more about my overall impression of the narrative. Without spoiling anything, you can tell from the trailer that the game focuses on intimacy issues, paranoia, and anxiety - which it does pretty well. While I enjoyed the story and the psychedelic visuals, the actual dialogue could use some polish; with the game like this I think you could avoid saying too much, and it will still have the same effect. I wish the text would not lock you into the conversation the entire time, you could just let the player walk around and read, not to mention that the camera tends to lock in the wrong place anyway. It's not a horror game aside from one little jump scare, it's more about the atmosphere and creating that isolation through an unsettling environment. I am not always a fan of dark shading and tiny rooms, but within the context of the narrative that tries to convey that feeling of being alone, I think the claustrophobic locations work very well.

The way I know that I enjoyed the story is when I start doing excessive speculating at the end, the game certainly does not give you all the answers. Honestly, I think it probably could use another 15 minutes of context, I didn't think it would end so abruptly, but in a way, I am sure that was the point. That being said, I prefer to have additional routes or multiple endings, or some optional objectives in general.


(+) Maybe the wording was not the best, but overall I thought the story was interesting, I enjoyed the mystery. The simple soundtrack complemented the atmosphere, and the unsettling locations made me very uncomfortable. I like how the game starts very unassuming and gets darker toward the end. I wrongfully lowered my guard if you know what I mean.


Nitpicks - The only big thing I would say is that you don't want to lock the player in the conversation all the time, you can just have the character walk around and talk to you, or rely more on the visual storytelling. Sometimes the camera got locked on a wall so it's not very immersive, and it probably could use a text skip. Even if you make a short game, it should have a few load points from the main menu, that way I don't have to start over when your game crashes which is exactly what happened. The pathing on the stairs was a little difficult to navigate.

Overall Thoughts: 6/10

This would be a really nice experience for free, but at $5 I feel like there are more wholesome games that do something similar, and I have to give them credit for doing it on a bigger scale. Overall, I like what you doing with the atmosphere and I think the experience was pretty neat, you just have to work on that text pacing and the dialogue. It felt a little abrupt to me, even though I don't expect an explanation for the story, I think it could go on for another 30 minutes if you put more thought into it.

A mentally and emotionally engaging walking simulator / visual novel / video game poetry. If nothing else, I'd say I'm glad that I played this.

Walls need not to be made of matter

This game roughtly last 50 minutes, but it needs no more to tell a great story about human relations, human creation, life and death, or at least, that is how I interpreted it. At the end of the day, this game provides more questions than answers.

I will say no more, only that you should give it a try.

The final act had some real mood going on and the music was quite nice. But whatever merits the game and its story has is easily drowned out by the frustration given by the slow text speed. Near the end I started checking and I could read each line five times before it switched to the next one and I'm a pretty slow reader. Adding to that, except for one part text always stops you from walking or even turning your head around.
This might have been better if the text had instead been voice acting, but really, this should have just been a short movie instead of a game.

Also the screen filter in this game might be one of the ugliest I've ever seen and I have no idea why it's being used on something that's supposed to look like a PS1 game.

A true instance of "game as art." I bought The Space Between on Itch quite a while ago, and it never left my thoughts. When it was released on Steam, I figured it was the perfect opportunity to revisit. The story is compelling and is enriched by multiple play-throughs. Most effective for me, though, are the stunning locations and haunting music. Highly recommended.

A very bold game and a unique experience in every way. Hypnotic, surreal, unsettling. The aesthetic gives this a very uncomfortable and eerie quality. I bought this on another platform a while ago and the way it feels to be in the spaces of this game left a lasting impression on me. I don't know of any similar game. It works with themes in a very effective way. You first see the model of the building and then the real thing. The lighting. Curtains. You can tell the maker of this game thinks about visuals, spaces and what mood they convey. Very subtle but all the more effective.

Definitely play this game if you are looking for something very different from the norm. I can't wait for the next game from this developer.

separation and closeness

I am not fond of games that have me blundering around in the dark. This causes nausea because you are visually disoriented. Also, the ending was just... nothing? OK you are done now, here are 2 chairs? Sorry but this was just not great. :(

A slow and compelling game. It took less than an hour to complete but it is a story worth lingering in.
