Timing a little strict?
First -- REALLY loving the music and style of this so far. I feel like I've been waiting for something like this for a while.

Now for the title -- normally I'm pretty good at rhythm games (I've played Rhythm Heaven, Taiko, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, other classics), and while I was generally getting the audio and visual cues in Melatonin, I was having trouble nailing "Perfect" timing consistently. It feels a little too tight. Not sure if others feel the same way.

Some other games give partial credit for non-perfects, so maybe that's why this feels a little punishing; I felt like nailing a "Perfect" was the only thing that mattered and that earning a "Late" or "Early" was basically the same as a full miss.

I'm excited to see where this game goes, but just wanted to throw out some feedback.

Keep in mind this thread was for an older demo build. Since then, the timing windows has been cleaned up a bit and there are options now to increase the hit window in the assist options if you want to.

Yes. If I have to enable a bunch of assists to succeed at the game, it's gonna have to be a pass for me. Nicely put together game though.

You guys are getting scores?
The tutorial is really bad, like doesn't help at all. And saying that I have to use accessibilities doesn't help either.
The visuals are good thought.

I had the exact same, was really vibing with the game but the strict timing kinda ruined it for me

You haven't played enough rhythm games if you think the timing is strict. Since you mentioned Taiko, can you play Oni up to at least 9 stars?

Agreed with these statements. timing could be a little more generous
Agreed, especially since late and early hits don't really contribute to your score..

ill make sure to tighten it up for the full release!

oops i meant i'll improve things for the full release not that i'd make the timing tighter/harder

The game looks really nice, and I love the music, but I've been having problems as well even though I've played quite a few rhythm games before, but the feeling I get isn't that the timing is too strict, I feel like the issue is more with the audio/visual cues, it feels like they induce me to press the button slightly earlier or later. For example, on the first level (the food one), when you have to press space on third beat (food flying low towards you), the cue works perfectly fine, but the other two cases (food flying high up and the box approaching you for a fast "shot"), I had to actually pay attention to the food reaching the character instead of listening/listening to the cues because it felt like the cues induced me to press the button slightly offbeat, even if I was using my foot or my other hand as a "metronome". Honestly, IDK if I managed to express myself well, but all I can say is that something feels weird

Everything was spot on for me, using the visuals, bobbing my head, or tapping my foot. Sometimes I wasn't even looking at the screen anymore because I was just jamming with the tune and still nailing perfects from the audio cues. Can't speak for everyone, but I though this was on the money.

the timings are fine, adjust the offset if its not for you. Devs, if you add less strict timing please make that optional, the game is great as is.
I generally enjoy rhythm games and am pretty good at them but, I agree with OP, the timing seems a little too strict. I'm going to play more and get a wider idea of how the game functions but I was struggling even in the tutorial even though I'm pretty sure I was hitting space to the correct cue. Maybe my spacebar has a bit of an input lag that the game can detect but I generally don't notice in text? I have a curved, split ergonomic keyboard so sometimes that's a little wonky for gaming.

Yeah. I feel this too. Play 'followers'. It's a great way to judge your timing because the screens turn red, yellow, or green depending on it. I get mostly yellows, but with neither early or late being more common.

I'd like to see an assistance switch that just gives you a tiny bit more time to hit the button before it's considered off.
