Hardcore Insane Weapon choices

As is evidenced by the first player to clear Insane Hardcore and Hitless, we know that spear is a great choice for these types of runs. Though, it seems mind/magic was the carry towards the end of the game.

Has anyone had success in their Insane or Hardcore Insane runs with other weaponry beyond spear?

i did my insane run with sword + shield from the beginning but with heavy focus on mind and spells later on.

[The Kurgan]

I did my Insane run with 2h legendary Axe, had just enough mind\focus to be able to use blood frenzy at start of a fight. Not bad cept the near the end with the stupid tower charge things. Was my 3rd play through though so had the game pretty down.
