In the ending where you just set them free without communicating with them, or try to subdue them, they push back the deathfog but in the progress, they scorch the entire world.
In the ending where you communicatie with them and become friends, they push back deathfog and leave everything lush and green. That's a massive difference!
The MC, I believe, is just a young man from the world where they got the stone. Apparantly the MC's world is a sort of Warhammer 40K type Death World, where monsters are an everyday occorunce, considering the MC grabs a branch and starts swinging on an elder god type being. (Talk about balls of pure brass).
The only information about the prologue is presented during the prologue, so not a lot to go on. The starting village could have been the MC's village that got swept up in the time jump. Other than that, I am unsure.
On another note, if you enjoy the amazing world-building that you must get from actually seeing and experiencing the world as opposed to massive lore dumps, I think you should check out Last Epoch. The world is one of the best ever, with one of the most interesting enemies also. You also experience the world in 4 "Time Epochs" (Pre-humanity era, Ancient Rome type era, Medieval era, and Fallen World era...basically Chrono Trigger world as an ARPG)
Don't expect the most compelling characters however. Your character is a robot who is unable to say no to some random walking up to them and asking if they could go get them 10 wolf pelts.... (grumble grumble stick that wolf pelt straight up his grumble grumble)
Finally, we learn in the game that the Bygones originally only had one colony in Drova and therefore there are certainly other places outside the fog that are inhabited. The fact that the druids in the prologue know about Drova and the gods, as well as their power, leads to the conclusion that they are descended from the Bygones.
Perhaps their empire has also perished in the outside world? Drivanus, on the other hand, must have died over time and may even have been accidentally bound to the "resurrection artifact". This kind of revival seems to be more of a side effect of the research.
