How do I use the slingshot?

I can equip it, but I can't actually use it. Trying to attack with it just causes me to swing with my fist. I'm on controller.

It takes quite a long time - well, in comparism to attacks with other type of weapons - to get off a sling shot.
So they're more a kind of initiating battles than to be used and switched to right in the fray of a battle.

You need ammo. Early game it's pebbles you find in rivers and ponds. Remember to equip them.

Sling is an off-hand - you have a one-handed weapon in one hand (or fists) and a slingshot as the alternate attack. Right click loads your slingshot (the black dot over your stamina turns white), the second right click takes a shot

If you're playing on the controller, it's L1 to load a projectile and L1 again to fire. I'm not sure it's explained anywhere, I found it trying all the buttons.

So if I understand, the sling is equipped in the offhand while equipping a 1H weapon in the main hand raher than as the second weapon loadout which you switch to...I was trying to use it as the second loadout with a sword and shield as the first, but just ended up swinging my fist...Or can it still work the way I was doing it? I didn't see any instruction about right-clicking, so maybe it works both ways...

sling works as offhand weapon, just like the shield. so rightclick to use it.
it has only one shot, so first load up, right click for shooting, holding it for longer aim time.
