joining a faction question
so my impression at the start of the game is that everyone in the woodcutter camp made me think twice about joining the remnants, but then everything in the areas immediately afterward wants to funnel me into joining the remnants. if i want to hold off and see what nemeton is like before choosing one to join, am i expected to just walk past all of the pit and remnant camp content and go all the way around to nemeton? is there some more natural feeling way of getting there, or a quest that i'm missing? i've already had to reload saves because trying to do a few quests ended up with me getting railroaded into a "i want to join the remnants" conversation that i couldn't opt out of.

Don't worry, you can do all the quests for both factions until the point where you have to decide whom you wish to join. Even if you have said once or twice "I want to join faction X". The good thing is: Even if you take on a mission to join a faction and you don't do it or decide to "fail" it, it's not marked as "failed" in your journal. So don't be afraid to not finish a quest you don't like (for example: If you don't want to do shady stuff but ended up with a mission in your journal).

About the "Is there any more natural way to get to Nemeton?": No, you have to do the long run, since the bridge is broken. I think the reason is, from a gamedesigner perspective: The druids from your own world were hinting you to go to Nemeton. They didn't know the existence of the Remnants, because it's a fairly new faction in this world compared to Nemeton. The game wants you to explore all the options before you decide and therefore "forcing" you to at least go by the entrance to the Remnants camp. Ofc you still can decide to entirely skip it, if you want to stick to the original plan and follow the recommendation from Cengiz/Asmus. BUT: Even if we talk about the the woodcutter camps recommendations: Blaad adviced you to visit the arena from the Remnants. So it entirely depends on your taste.

so after you get super drunk with eugene and wake up and talk to him in the bar again the conversation funnels you into telling him you want to join and he says yes with no opt out once you start talking. does this not actually make you join? is it something else after where it like 'becomes official'? is there like a specific "chooses remant or nemeton" quest or something later and all the "i want to join" quests where someone is gonna vouch for you aren't actually joining?

For the remnants you have to talk to Kilian to join the faction. And you have to explicitly say so to him. Eugene Just gives his OK to join, but you have to get his OK and Boris. And two of their guys each to Join.

My guy, joining the remnants is actually pretty hard, with multiple storylines and about 4 options to reconsider throughout the process. You can't accidentally join without english being your third or fourth language that you didn't put much effort into.

No, it doesn't make you join. You just got his favour and he would let you join his squad, if you join the Remnants. So don't worry, the game will give you a VERY clear hint, if you would permanently join a faction. You get a text like "If you join us now, there is no going back. The others will not take you anymore" and then you have options accept or wait. So like I said, don't worry, just play the game until you reach the kind of dialogue.
