If you havent entered nemeton yet and you follow mikesch, you can use the letter to blackmail palina into letting you in.
Theres actually still another way to enter nemeton. Either you have to be around level 12-14 or its related to a combat skill. If you tell Palina that you know how to fight, she will say that she can see that and lets you enter like that too.
Especially since this game was made with gothic in mind and in those games you were always able to get people from one faction into another or similar things. I mean i could see her just being used as a decoy to get more safely to Nemeton but why not make a more fitting quest then.
The second option you mentioned will probably come in handy once im on my second or third run.
