was there really no way to write "(He smirks)" instead of making every dialogue sound like a 2010 tumblr conversation

What's the freaking difference? If you are talking to a female NPC, it is obvious that SHE's smirking, so there's no need to add a pronoun.

So this is going to be the next petty attempt to cancel the game? lmao.
what

this has nothing to do with pronouns

Some people are sometimes trying to start something about that here, feel free to ignore it. I know what you mean about the asterisks, I think your suggestion would also have worked. There's really no bigger explanation for the decision. Hope you're enjoying the game otherwise!
i am, thank you! it's just that every time i see an action or description between asterisks all i can think of is "Rawr XD *glomps u*" and it is off-putting haha

was there any debate about this at all within the team? do you know?

Most of the team is pretty clueless about a lot of online-isms and just doesn't have that same association at all. If you don't know of glomping roflcoptors, you never think of them.
i suppose that's true, yeah

Devs aren't native English speakers and it shows. Noun "smirk" has negative connotations in English, and is usually a condescending, smug, redditor-like kind of smiling. A better alternative for a benevolent smile would be, well, "smile" or "beam".

I enjoy the game but they really need to hire either professional translator or actuall writer. I expected dark grim atmosphere and ruthless world as advertised, but dialogues are borderline stardew/tik tok sometimes. If you know what I mean.

This is kind of important on the writing actually, because it really does make a lot of NPCs come across as looking down on you.

Yeah some of the writing and most of the "grunt" voice acting really can take me out of the atmosphere. The overdone laughs, oh my god the overdone laughs kill me.
