But that lets them make mage really rewarding. I squirreled a lot of points and became full fledged mage and it absolutely slaps. I have enough base focus to just keep casting fire shout and it is pretty op.
If you want to go that route i recommend using daggers before that point, they are the only weapons that benefit from pumping Mind since the right click attack scaled with focus.
I mean for the last 30% I did mainly spellcast, but I had most of the world explored by that point.
you have a base focus stat, which you can increase throgh gear, mind-stat and potions, by a lot.
This stat determines the point until which you get "mana reg".
all spells/runes have a focus cost, if your focus stat is at or higher than the requirement, you do not even need to autoattack with your weapon at all.
if you manage to reach the 60 or 70 focus point, then you can cast a spell, that will generate focus for you.
also there are potions that will generate a lot of focus points per second for up to 50sec (if i recall correctly).
In my current playthrough (Act 4), i have reached above 30 base focus, as a melee focused character equip.

i recommend to try to play a mage class earliest on your second playthrough, and then rush through the story to get to act 3 to unlock your runestone.
most of the combat can be skipped, and you can rush through in under an hour i assume.

So, TLDR; yes, you can be a mage. 100%
The only reason some may think of a disadvantage is that you start weak and struggle from time to time, if you save your stat points until you find a spirit teacher, as I did. But once you are able to stat spirit, you'll equip decent gear and snowball hard.
