Axe vs Sword (and Shield)
Someone help, I can't decide what to specialize in. Putting points in both also seems unwise since the (first) sword skill makes use of bleeds (dex) whereas the (first) axe skill just has massive damage (str). Using a shield to learn to parry seems like it'd be a lot of fun though. And then there's magic somewhere down the line? I feel mentally stuck.

Yeah same. I just know that magic becomes available later, so I am just squirreling a lot of LP, because I might need it for that.

Seems like a waste to go through a lot of the game just hoarding LP, don't you think? Hahaha

I read that magic doesn't ever become viable as a "main" weapon.

Swords are the all-rounder.
Axes are big slow hits.
Daggers are quick and short range, high risk high reward.
Spears have range, but slightly weaker hits than swords.

With swords and spears you can add a shield or sling off-hand.
Shields give an alternative to dodge.
Slings are useful for mobile/ranged enemies.

I personally settled on spear/shield, spear can regain stamina on hit which facilitates blocking/dodging, and shield can stun enemies and give you guaranteed crits on perfect blocks.

But I am thinking of another playthrough with axes because I like the unga-bunga playstlye.

Magic is viable to use, in fact I use flame shout as my main damage source after I got far enough to use it outside scrolls, but you won't really get to benefit until later, and making a mage playstyle isn't really viable in itself, magic is gonna be a support tool either way, but it's extremely potent if you invest into it. You still need focus and you only gain focus by hitting enemies and not getting hit, so you aren't going to be a full on caster.
