I did pull Black Zero from the Navigator Supply Capsule, which I received five free tickets for and guarantees an S-Rank character for your first 10 pulls and an S-Rank weapon for your second 10 pulls.
I also spent $6 on the daily drop pack, which gives you 150 paid elemental metal, 170 lottery coins, as well as increased drop rate, 30 elemental metal (which sadly doesn't count as paid elemental metal) and a supply box every day for a month.
It helps cut the grind, but I've only been playing for about a week, so the amount of progress I've made should be possible for free in two. You just want to be sure to do the daily stuff, keep getting better armor from co-op, upgrade it, you can also scrap the old stuff and buy new stuff.
Leveling up your player level gives you more ways to grow stronger. You could get the exp pack if you really want to pick up the pace, but I'm making good progress without it. Most of your exp is gonna come from the daily quests, so don't burn yourself out trying to grind like mad, just take care of those and relax. This is still very much a mobile game, so it's kind of a slow burn.
S-Rank stuff is really good early on. I played as Black Zero a bunch, but since he has no stars, his abilities are limited, he can't use more than one card, and I can't afford the 1200 arena points for his card.
Meanwhile, Mega Man, a B-Rank character, I've gotten him up to four stars, gave him two of his cards (Mega Man and Leaf Shield), leveled up his cards, have the C-Rank Mega Buster you start with maxed out at five stars and leveled up, have my chips leveled up as well, and now he can hold his own.
Once you get further and can get S-Rank stuff to that point, I'm sure it will be far more powerful, but at this stage it's beneficial to have really strong low-rank equipment.
Granted, I'm not an expert, I've only been playing for a few days, but I'm part of that 11% and I haven't exactly dumped $1,000 on it or anything.
Hope this helps. Don't be discouraged. Remember, slow burn. This isn't Mega Man X4, you're not gonna be seeing the credits roll in an afternoon. Just play a little each day and have fun.
Example: Roll.EXE is the best Story char. She can roll through the Story mode.
Servbot is good at boss fight (since he's tiny)
A mobile game strategy is to start out generous and simple for the first few sections before a difficulty jump.
When you have enough patches, upgrade him asap, he's a great character to use in every mode, maybe not in pvp but can't really say about that since i don't play much that mode in particular.
At 4 stars he gains a shield after you use Raikousen it will help you through Jakob and Story Mode.
you won't function unless you pour all the resources they give you onto one - two characters .
Same with weapons, sadly. Barely keeping up with the curve at lv31 with 57k power, one stage has a huge difference in requirements but I did get lucky with all the pulls, have several S ranks including roll.exe, while I may not use her (using zero 2* atm) it does make me wonder what if you don't get lucky with the free pulls - gem pulls, it's already hard enough as it is.
This already on a character with 2 chips leveled to my current level, full armor lv30 with +30 improvement, maxed character skills, maxed side skills, 1* A + B weapons maxed with the most upgrades I can squeeze out of it in there - and still, like I said above, barely keeping ahead of the curve by like 1000-4000
I haven't spent a cent yet but I think I got the last area left to go but yeah, I die like every few screens but a strong weapon with a big spread helps.
This might help some who haven't read Steam guides or whatevs: https://www.reddit.com/r/MMXDive/comments/n3dz4v/for_new_players_resources_links_guides_and_faq/
And if you want a Guild I run ZX Hunters so you're welcome to jump in on that. I just needed more to do daily haha
For that, they need to be on the same server as you.
it also gets worse the longer it goes on, at 60 now and the stages are like 200k more power over me lol
did the same, upgraded everything whenever it's available, all dailies done and everything is enchanted/upgraded, you use very few lives at 50, and at lv60 stages it spikes up. noticeably around the train stage boss, that's where bosses turn into damage sponges afterwards and deal 1/3 - half you health in one hit.

This is also considering I got lucky with a roll.exe pickup, pretty sure my struggle would be x100 worse if I didn't get lucky with the free pulls
I appreciate the offer, but I ended up dropping this because I hit a progression wall just like the poster above me, and I can't afford to spend money to keep going.
what level were you before hitting said wall?
I personally have not hit a wall to be exact, just noticing how it easily takes a few lives at volcano now.
Starting from military train stages is where I could no longer get the full 16 stars, only 15, same for later stages.
I'm at 65 right now, can clear the volcano stages but not with 16 stars and ofc not without losing a few lives
