The biggest benefit seems to be getting a blend of spell casters right away. Depending on your mage choices, you'll need to find something to protect them as they get stronger. I went Demonology so got the Ashen spam line to tank hits while the pyro and mentalists either killed or turned everything.
Finishing the cities quest line first, instead of much later in a normal game, gets you the room that expands all domains by one earlier. A couple of those added will give you a lot of space to cover the plentiful permanent locations in the area. Not to mention the castle will give 100 xp for each new unit and all units water walk.
After that, head north for trolls or dwarves, south for the Orcs or drive through the easy zone to get multiple city bonuses.
Finding enough gold spots will be the pain though. You can also just add extra rooms for the gold upkeep/income to smooth it out. I ended up using mana->gold a few times due to the volume of permanent mana spots in the area. Using cultists can also work to reduce the gold issue.
