What is your opinion about lesser demons?
Lesser demon guide of Calgacus

I feel early game demonologist is weak, boring and stale. Maybe my strategy is faulty so I would like to exchange opinions. My opinions are just for early to mid game.

Tourist: useless in combat but phenomonal at scouting. It have good synergies with Sacrificial Ritual and Sacrificial Summon. Solid lesser demon for strategy map.

Rook: less speed=less map speed=slower and weaker gameplay. I think it must only decrease battle movement speedi It is useless as it is.

Vulture: useless lvl 1 flank bonus. OP lvl 2 gold bonus. Average lvl 3 mana bonus. This one is fun to level up imo but this one is useless at combat too.

Pawn: I think losing a unit and all the experience it has is too punishing in this game. So I can not level up this one properly in my playthroughs. Design idea is good but it is in wrong game. Useless .

Smoker: Who likes choking his own army to death? I do not. Pass!

Kobold: utterly useless at lvl 1. It can work at lvl 2.

Gourmand: has anyone tried to level up this one? It seems like it will be very expensive. I passed this one.

Alp: this can be good with certain setups. Overall a good demon but not for all.

Warlock: +3 focus is good for healers early on. There are no ability damage dealers early on so level up bonuses are not usefull at early game.

Arbiter and paradox: those look nearly impossible to use early on.

What is your opinion? Do you think demonologist suck at early game too?

Vulture alone makes early game the easiest of all 4 classes.

I'd add this also has synergies when combined with the Paradox into a Greater Enigma Demon.

Since only the slowest unit in the group matters, putting Rook on Cavalry is very good. It is a cheap and easy demon to level up. In the early game, this is an extremely effective demon for sacrificial stacks too, since dying means losing HP, means progressing the demon to the next level.

In the early game, this matters a great deal. I generally put this on most of my backline units, since they don't benefit from other early-game demons (Rook or Pawn).

Extremely useful, for sacrificial stacks. If you find a hard battle, just make 5 Goblins/Cultists, put Pawns on them, and attack. Once they are fully leveled this way, they make for extremely good ingredients for greater demons.

When I have a flying tower, I would increase my hiring slots to level up Pawns. As I flew close to an enemy stack, I would hire lots of cultists, then put a Pawn in one, sacrifice it, put the same pawn in the next cultist, sacrifice again, repeat.

This is certainly a hard one to justify early game, but very useful once you have a medium strength stack with healers. If you can get past the initial debuff, this demon gives you an advantage against mortals and against undead (because their Choking fumes won't affect you).

Again, this not a very early-game friendly demon. But if you can find a decent archer and have lots of protection; and maybe a Corrupted Healthy glyph; it can make for a devastating backliner.

Extremely strong demon. I'd level up as many of these as battle loot drops allow. As Rations, Bandages, and Finion Beer drop, I would have my Gourmet spam them in battle to level up. Afterwards, you'd have a unit that steals health as effectively as the Vampire glyph used to (before it was nerfed).

Bandages in particular drop a lot, so if you pair up a Gourmet with your starter apprentice (summons Ashen Ones at the cost of Bleeding), you can easily use up bandages.

I couldn't find a good use for this demon, and it is pretty difficult to specifically kill routed units.

Not that useful in my opinion. I prefer to build Crystaline Gardens and put the +2 Focus room extension. Two of those extensions are usually more than enough for most battles. And I also couldn't find many good ability damage dealers.

Arbiter = purely bad. There's no immunity to Focus Leak from leveling up, so it deals more damage to my playstyle (lots of buffs) than it helps.

Paradox = overpowered. It has a 75% execution threshold that might be bugged right now, since it triggers on all attacks, not just abilities.
See https://steamcommunity.com/app/1581770/discussions/0/7434949789840447799/ for leveling it up easily.

I like actually enjoying a game and trying different stuff instead of reducing everything to MS Excel.

About mid game now and demonologist is fine. Those small bonuses from early demons add up to a lot.

Fully agree.

Warlock is good for healers early on but where it really shines is with archers, especially elves- if you use the +2 damage cult from which comes from the same city you're buying them from you can get +10 damage on a snipe, area attack, or elemental arrow. Fuse it with a kobold or pawn and you can oneshot most tier 1 units and take a huge chunk out of bigger ones.

A bit late but I want to add a very fun Alp demon usage that I found. When put into a grizzly bear, even at lvl 1, it changes its roar -3 willpower to -6 willpower, almost making them break already. With 2 bears with alp, you can make enemies route in 1 turn. I am currently playing on impossible campaign with 2 alped bears and 1 slaver orc and my army of slaves is huge. I just attack a stack of tier 3 enemies, and enslave all of them in 2-3 turns. Demon units like hiveminders can also be enslaved that way, allowing me to make a full stack of hiveminder demons.

The alps on my bears are now at level 3, making their -3 willpower roar into a -12 willpower roar. Each bear makes my enemies route with only 1 roar, its a very funny way to break the game with unlimited free tier 3 units. In most cases they are already at level 10 as well.

I also made it with a cult that gives +2 focus, and made that building upgrade that gives another +2 focus to all units, my bears can roar multiple times in a fight as well.

Its also not a very late game strat, either. On gillyshire start, you can buy a bear failry early on, alp is not a hard demon to make and slavers can be recruited from either weekly bonus, any event, or by claiming an orc camp anywhere.

Ngl, i'm kind of disappointed that there's no way we can field those nasty demons you fight in the poles, but, lesser demons can be pretty nasty, especially if you make them from the cults you get from the Dwarven cities in my opinion, which are probably the best overall, once you start fusing them lesser demons for great demons though, stuff becomes REALLY gnarly, so overall i like them a lot, however i gotta say the Occult spells are kind of boring, saved perhaps for the spell that transforms one of your units into a Core Dweller which can keep all the learned skills .
LeFlesh Feb 25, 2024 @ 6:45am
Can't field them? Most are slaveable.
Trance Feb 25, 2024 @ 7:02am
I don't remember those demons being slaveable ? is it a new thing or am i just dumb ?
LeFlesh Feb 25, 2024 @ 7:06am
Unless a unit is 'Immune to Psychology' you can enslave it. Spam Intimidate/Zerbo's Curse/Roar and they'll become 'Broken' eventually

Demons have always been slaveable. (I think other than the Aether Beast, since it had mind control immunity or something.)

The problem is that you couldn't turn them into Volunteers like other mortal slaves, so they'd be stuck with the -20% damage and armor penalty.
LeFlesh Feb 25, 2024 @ 7:07am
The Sky Iron 'Slaver' glyph replaces Enslaved with Follower!

As for the Lesser Demons, they start out slow but get ridiculously OP. I think that's the intentional design for Demo's pace in the game.

low tier ones do not get very strong. Mid tier ones are like you said. 3 essence ones are broken at level 3 :)
