What potions are you making and why? What runes do you use?
I am totally lost here. I am playing an Alchemist. I only made potions to get the coloured pips recipe.

Thing is I am not really making potions at all. I have no need to since I don't know why I should be making them. I don't know if it's because I auto result combat most times, so I don't go in my nap sack and use potions.

Should I be using the potions in combat? If so, what should I be doing? Can we use potions out of combat? I can't see how if we can.

I haven't used runes yet because it says if I unequipped them or replace them, they get destroyed and I am worried I lost a good rune for something down the line. If you are an Alchemist what do you do with your runes and how do you quip them?

Potions can be used in combat only. There are Steam guides for all possible potions, glyphes and undead, you may want to check them if you are interested.
Runes can be equipped by all classes in the same way, open unit screen and click on rune slot.

I am doing that right now sandman. Thing is, why should I? What do you do when you play? I am always using the traits that the units have so I don't use my potions. Also using a potion means I can't attack with my unit correct? So why use a potion then?

Also since I auto combat most times, maybe I shouldn't be playing an Alchemist then?

Most potions don't end your turn, so units can use multiple potions per turn. But if you are auto-resolving most fights, that probably means you are on a low difficulty. So the class doesn't really matter.

I will give an example. As alchemist I attacked a mage tower and lost the fight without any chance. So I reloaded and used 3 potions to give my best ranged units +3 range and +3 missile damage until end of the fight, I won the fight easily.
Or another example - I attacked undead mage tower and lost again. So I reloaded and used 3 or 4 potions which deal 30+ damage to each of up to 7 units, basically I killed 4 units by those potions alone and the potions use just 1 action, they don't end turn.
Or yet another example - I was attacked by much stronger units while having only a few melee defenders so I used a potion to double HP of my defender and it survived and allowed my ranged units to keep shooting.

You can get some very powerful combinations later in the game, and even some items for heroes, but they require plenty of colours, and you can only get more of them by fighting strong stacks or mixing stronger and stronger potions together.

That said, certain starting potions work extremely well for duration of the game, so you can stick with them if you don't want to spend too much time with crafting simulator.

Eagle Sprit: +3 range on units. It's possible to stack multiple on a unit. Works really well on hero units, and quality ranged units. It can pretty much break the game along summoning strategy
Sealed Elemental: Spawns fire elemental. Decent attack. Since it uses elemental damage, useful against multiple units. But it's best use is as cannon fodder. Trow a multitude of them on the first battle line, and ai will spend it's spells on them, and got stuck killing them while ranged units will take them out.
Sacred Water: White damage bomb. Useful against everything that's week against white damage. In short, it's undead annihilator.

As alchemist:

- sell ore for gold (worth more than crafting)
- use heavily most consumables in combats.

I always had a few bombs (dwarven ignition) and rations at all times for easy heals and ranged damage on even your melee units. Eagle spirit is super strong on ranged units. Sealed elemental is really good too

Beserk shrooms are great if you dont have a shaman in your army too.

I usually spammed these basic items and saved the really good ones for the tough fights.

Whatever glyphs you get as alchemist you just put on your least expendable units. You wont get a lot in the game unless you want to spend all your gold at merchants

I understand your feeling. There are "No Need" to use potion for winning. However, This is one of the content of the game. I suggest you would take a try, at least once. They will make you more powerful...

Use a Potion just cost 1 Action Point, you still have 2 Action Point to Attack, or you can use 3 potion at the same time
Or you can use some buff potion before battle, like 100% HP

Thank you so much everyone. That does help me a lot. I really appreciate the help.

Potions are super powerful. They can turn otherwise impossible battles into a walk in the park. Many of them require forward thinking to drink at the start of the battle, because action points become too valuable once the enemy engages you.

They won't help if you auto-resolve though. And if you usually auto-resolve, you will have less experience to help you use them effectively in more difficult battles!
