Building tower room extensions
So I noticed that for some of the better / more powerful extensions to be built, I need a crafting combination like 6 orange + 6 blue for example. With only 4 ingredient slots, there's no way to achieve that combination using what I have. Are there some super-components I'll find later on, or is there a way to combine weaker into stronger ones? Sorry if this has been discussed, the game doesn't really explain its systems very well.

6+6 is rather easy, that's just 3 pips per ingredient.
There are ingredients with 1-5 pips in the game. There are amplifiers also which give extra pips to what you already have. For instance, adamantium can give 6 pips in some cases.

If you are alchemist, you can easily combine ingredients into better ones like you did in your first alchemist quest. Artificer can do it as well, but not that efficiently.

You can either try different receipts yourself or check Steam guides, there is a separate one for every class.

Just to add on to what has already been said, higher level ingredients become more common when you start entering more dangerous areas/fighting more difficult stacks. Things like looter and whatnot can help as well.

That's what I mean, the only thing I found with 3 pips so far was a nice artifact I got as a quest reward and was hoping to equip it on my apprentice. Everything else is just 1-2. I guess I just need to play and explore more. I'll also check out the guides - playing artificer atm.

Maybe you already know it, but just in case: you don't need to use ingredient with 3 orange and then another with 3 blue, those are rather rare indeed. Instead you can use ingredient with 2 orange and 1 blue and combine it with ingredient with 1 orange and 2 blue, those are more common.

Yeah I knew that, but even those are rare unfortunately. Most of what I found in loot sites, mined or harvested has just had one color pip, or maybe 2 of different colors.

Slightly related question, I know how for artificer once you create a rune the recipe for it appears, but for several stronger ones, the recipe didn't appear and I had to remember how I made it if I wanted another one. Is this a bug, or another mechanic I'm not aware of?

As alchemist you can craft your way to higher ingredients rather easily.

As artificier you can also craft your way up but its very expensive since ore and glyphs are worth a lot of gold to sell.

You need to save up your high level alchemy materials for room extensions.

A bug unless it is still being crafted. Recipe becomes available after completion of the crafting.

As alchemist you can create items with 3 pips from items with 1-2 pips.

The artificer can combine three two pip items into a single three pip glyph. For the six orange, six blue example you gave, you only need to craft two owl glyphs and two bowman glyphs in order to meet that requirement. It makes it easier if you view the artificer's crafting as "condensing" pips: combining three pips gives you a low level glyph worth two pips in crafting, combining six gives you a mid level glyph worth three, and combining nine gives a high level one worth four. This makes it easier to split up what you need for room extensions and crafting in general since the three pip glyphs (such as owl and bowman) can easily give you room extensions up to 12 pips. For later ones like the Dwarven Vault's Gold Rush extension, you need the four pip glyphs.

and there's always just hitting up the local alchemist store or city to buy ingredients.

But it's mostly refine to better items, then use those items. Or explore the mean bad places.

Over time I take the lower level mats (as artificer) with one pip, combine three into glyphs with two pips, then take those two pip glyphs and combine them to make a three pip glyph.

I do that until I was able to get more powerful mats.

And as someone else said you will soon also see opportunities to buy 3, 4, and even 5 pop mats in stores in cities.

Actually most of the powered materials you need will be sold either at alchemist shops or various cities, the paladin city over in the east sells those ones with 3 orange and one blue quite a lot. It is true that you can't always do it at once unless you're an alchemist because they can really make just about everything they need.
