In my most recent game as Alchemist (impossible difficulty), I went for Guardian (for the Guardian Wisp) + Nature (for Primordial Forest). This combination gives you large domain control and lets you place Primordial Forests in a lot of places. By week 10, I had over 100 Allfire income with only 20% of it coming from 2 Great Allfire nodes.

Choosing your starting spellpages is about more than what starting spells it gives you though. Going nature/nature will get you access to the 2nd/3rd/4th tier Nature spells much faster, and they have some real good ones there. Befriend Beast is extremely strong, even if you dont want to keep the beast it removes an entire unit from an enemy stack, theres basically no other page 2 spell that can have that much immediate impact on an upcoming battle. Resist Elements is the best 9 mana you can spend to improve your fighting power in an upcoming battle. Pathfinding can greatly increase your stacks mobility and movement speed, letting you clear areas faster, find goodies faster, and expand your range of safe areas to plant down your tower/lodges. Summon Beasts on page 3 can give you various T3 units which are quite strong. There's more, but you get the point. If you take at least one nature page, you're more or less guaranteed to get to 3-4 pages at some point in the game. If you don't, you may never get a single page.
I'd prefer if it didn't trash the forest, then it'd be ok.
from a primordial forest and was shocked about the costs. So I split them up and used each for scouting. As the have no gold costs they can be used as free scout. Once you find another forest on the map you can use the beast creation spell again, as you can use it on any forest that is visible. So you can use this to scout very fast and secure free mana, gold and other resources. No other spell class allows such a scouting speed, espically for combining it with the buff for higher visibility. Lateron you will probably go for the bigger beasts spells that creates a level 3 unit, which is better than any of the other spells.
(you can get a phantom warrior for 75 mana, or a medusa for 75 mana or a cool tier 3 beast for 75 mana - so this is quite strong)
The kernel in the end (note that you can even built several kernels) allows you to get rid of any gold costs for beast units, which is pretty strong.
I have found how useful 3 bees are. It was very useful to fly them one by one in different directions as scouts. And having reached great distances, they have amassed an incredible amount of material. I realized how unreliable my first impressions were.
