(Why?) is this game a market fail?
I really like this game (60 hours+), but when researching it’s market success (eg https://vginsights.com/game/1581770 )
It looks like it does not sell enough copies / does not have enough active players.

Are these numbers correct (enough)?
What will this mean for the games future (DLC/Patches)?

I don't know if thjey are correct, but one thing I saw in your link is that there were 1438 active players 36 minutes ago ( so around 1400 GMT)

That is excellent for games in this genre.

Age of Wonders is the game niche behemoth, and I don't think it regularly got that number of active players.

According to steam spy it sold over 50k copies..could be enough to support it for few DLCs hopefully, the team seems to be quite small according to credits.

I wouldn't worry. If you check their other game (Fantasy General 2), it has similar stats and yet we got several DLCs and localizations for it so I guess it was successful enough.

This game is fantastic and I would suggest telling your friends about it and/or gifting people copies.

I hope it is selling well enough to get support, DLCs and a sequel. As for why sales may be lagging I would guess the number one reason is lack of coverage. It's been out for two weeks and there are only 11 media reviews of it on Metacritic and none of them are big sites (AFAIK...none of the names were familiar to me). There's not a lot of YouTube coverage either, although all of it that I have seen has been positive.

All that said, it seems to be doing much better than the Master of Magic remaster based on forum activity and that game was on my radar for years vs this game which I was only aware of for a couple of weeks before release,

No idea how accurate the numbers on that site are, but this is a pretty small team (I believe I saw mentioned by dev in another thread only 10 people), so they don't need to sell that many copies for it be a success. It's also a relatively niche IP in a relatively niche subgenre, so I would think they were not expecting to sell millions of copies.

Because amount of advertising done approaches zero. Most people definitely don't like searching for games and instead buy the most famous thing currently, which happens to be 2 remakes (wow, rebuying the same game) and 1 wizard game with ragebait advertising.

Marketing here has potential to be done on twitter rage too - just tell em that everyone is white and that "dwarven racism" is positive trait giving +2 to damage.

Harry Potter, or as Bruce Lee would say PottAah. "Viral marketing" was based around comments of JK Rowling.
