if you pass on the dwarf, another should come, takes awhile but does happen
no it should trigger no matter what you do, if this is your first game it may just be late. :/

For example, artificer is craft 4 items. If you don’t do that for a long time, you want get a hero. If you craft the 4 items asap you get the hero asap.
Same for alchemy/Necro equivalents.

That earth barrier skill can carry entire fights against vastly superior stacks right from the beginning. I tried all starting apprentices and the earth one is clearly the strongest in the early game. With the fire glyphs and a proper weapon enchantment he deals really good damage (if he isnt busy spamming the rock barrier with focus reg in heavy fights).
