There are alot of victory conditions actually.

victory is achievable by fulfilling 3 out of 6 conditions in the final quest:
1)Defeat mages
2)Level hero(not apprentices!!!) to level 15
3)Improve relations with 7 cities
4)Own 5 landmarks
5)Research 42 spells
6)Own 5 apprentices

And you can doo all the 6 conditions to get different ending message but won't change much.
Yup and then there is an easy battle and you can end through a portal.

I destroyed Uram the Red's tower (by killing the stack of troops guarding the place) and all units nearby that I could find. A few turns later I got a message that he is plotting against me. Is he still a threat without a tower or does he have a second one? What should I do?

If you win the battle in his main tower, he is gone. All his stacks will become faction-less armies.

It should say on the tower description if it’s the main tower. If in doubt: Main Tower armies of Circle mages always include two Medusa. If there have not been two Medusa in your tower battle, it was not his main tower.

you screwed up bro, that was his circle tower, not his main tower, i hope your on easy level
