Battle strategy and flanking
At first glance, some might think that the combat is minimalist and shallow, but once you understand how flanking works and you can ping pong (front and back) a tough enemy and take one less retaliate, you realize there is more here.
There might have been a tool tip that explained this, but maybe a more crafted combat tutorial that hammers it home would be welcome in the future.

It is mechanic from AoW 3 which is 8 years old as far as I remember. Numerical advantage allows to choose how enemy spends their action points. For instance, you can attack unit 6 times without any counterattacks, or trigger 3 counterattacks and then attack up to 15 times without any counterattacks.

To people who are not used to these types of games this may not be obvious but that's fine, no need to rob people of their own sense of mastery by tutorializing them to death with more advanced tactics.

There is a certain satisfaction of solving a tricky combat with deviously clever tactics and discovering something new on your own.

Also trees and barricades reduce enemy visibility so you take less damage too. With the guard stance combined you become quite hard to kill.
