Is there a time limit?
I hate these kind of games since you have no feeling of what you should do next and everything is trial and error. Also no overview of what spells you will unlock in which school of magic, just playing blind.

For example there is a tower next to mine that will occassionally spit out enemies to attack me. Will those become harder over time? Can I take my time and explore and harvest everything for an entire year or will the attacker level up and send 4 golems instead of just 1 by then?

The game needs a lot of polish, it sounds like. Perhaps a lack of adequate beta testing? Or perhaps a lot of features that ought to have been included at release were kept back for future DLC money grabs. It was kinda this way with the earlier dev game, Fantasy General II, as well.

You have a main quest that takes you through the game, a grimoire that always tracks what you should be doing. Pretty much everything has a detailed tooltip to boot.

They do get harder, but I think it's tied to your own progression rather than time as such, so to an extent you could ignore it (though why?) though the AI mages will of course continue to spread their own kingdoms, even if they are just running around with the odd naga.

Eh, just take it out. Its not really difficult to do. And then you wont have any pressure for a while.

But yes, stacks become stronger as time goes on. Im not sur if its tied to your progression, but I dont think so.
