how to keep Gilbert alive?

i got max Rapport Gilbert but at chapter 26, soldier said that he dead. is this bug?

you likely did not do the optional battle before.

Come to speak of it, it kinda sucks that he takes the legendary darkness grimoire and the horse I gave him with him....

He will come back later in an optional battle if his rapport is maxed and you will find out he didn't die.
